A STATE BANK

MOVEMENT has been initiated in Palmerston North to demand the establishment of a State Bank. In view of the excellent showing put up by the commercial banks operating in New Zealand this new movement is hard to understand. How could the establishment of a State bank improve the present banking situation? Certain it is, that the banking business would be provided with another institution, thereby adding to the cost of handling the banking business of the community. The facilities which a State bank could offer would not be an addition to banking facilities, but a mere duplication of them. As it is, the banking facilities for doing banking business arc far ahead of the requirements of the country. It might, therefore, be worth while pursuing an enquiry in the opposite direction to see whether some economics can be effected, and the saving effected being used to reduce bank charges.
