pUBLIC sympathy for the unemployed and the readiness to aid them may be jeopardised bv such demonstrations given by the workless of Dunedin and W'- Unemployment is regarded as one of the most in p- <■ problems created by the depression, and efforts are beini- m ’ n- 'll sides to lighten the burden. But when those efforts on +li o ; rt of the public are ignored, the authorities flouted, and di: irbances created, then a different feeling may be created. With the approach oi the winter months when unemployment may be expected to increase, and when a greater call will be extended to the public to help the workless, outbreaks of disorder, such as have occurred in Dunedin and Auckland, will alienate public sympathj and the unemployed as a whole will then be the poorer. The unruly element, however, should not be regarded as representative of the whole body of unemployed.
