SHREWD WINS EARLE STAKES

WANGANUI MEETING OPENS

FAILURES OF FAVOURITES

(By ‘

“KESTREL.”)

The failure of the favourites in five of the seven races decided was an outstanding feature of the opening day of the Wanganui Joekey Club’s autumn meeting yesterday, especially in view of the fact that in each instance the publie had justification for the support accorded their choice. However, even betting ensured that none of the winners paid double-figure dividends, while the success of two favourites was some compensation for backers. The principal race, the Earle Stakes, was won by Shrewd, who is a consistent performer on the Wanganui track. The open sprint attracted only four starters but the winner turned up in View Halloo, who was not so well fancied as might have been expected. The Hawera stable of 0. Cox provided three winners in Davistock, Hampden and Barbaean.

The weather was all that could be desired, bright sunshine being experienced for the greater part of the afternoon, while it was not till after the last race had been run that a light heat shower sprinkled the course. After the dry spell the track was hard and fast, as the times registered in the events will indicate, and some of the contestants appeared not to relish the conditions. The attendance appeared to be up to that of the first day of the 1931 autumn meeting, but as there were only seven races yesterday the totalisator turnover showed a decided drop. The amount handled during the day was £6799, compared with £12,193 on the opening day last year, the decrease being £5394. The management of the meeting was first-class, and the events were got off to schedule time, a matter which must be accounted a satisfactory feature of the gathering. Though the fields were On the small side there was only one event in which no second dividend was paid, that being in the open sprint. The smallness of the fields did not detract from the interest in the racing, as all events were well contested and the issue was generally in doubt until the final stages were reached. In winning the Earle Stakes Shrewd proved consistent, for only a fortnight ago he finished second in each of the principal events at the Egmont meeting. He was always in the picture yesterday and finished on well. Monalof verv nearly brought off a surprise when she* finished second, and she appears to be in good form just now. The favourite Grand Jury, could not foot it with the leading pair over the final stages, though he ran an honest race. Joie de Vai was a good fourth, while Ma hora, indifferently handled, ran a decent race under the circumstances. Flower and High Falutin’ were only fair, though in the case of High Falutin' it must be mentioned that he lost a good position through interference at the half-mile dropping back to near the tail of the field. King Colos'U-". who appeared a trifle sore, also suffered through the incident and finished last. After the race an inquiry was opened into this incident and after several adjournments it was announced, after the last race, that there was not sufficient evidence to warrant action being taken. View Halloo’s win in the Flying Handicap was accompanied by a really good dividend for a four-horse field. The three-year-old, who carries the same colours as High Falutin’, was in at a handy impost and won convincingly in good time. The hard track did ’ not suit the favourite, Hunting Cry, but he ran a sterling race, especially as he was conceding 251 b. to 1 iew Halloo. Juggle gave a good display for one that appeared sh>» of a race, but Pomp was rather disappointing. In the Westmere Hurdles Conjurer n.. winner of the Century Hurdles at the Wanganui winter meeting last May. ran away from his five opponents over the final stages to win easily. The hard going did not appear to trouble him. Royal Acre finished resolutely for another consistent placing. Just an Idea was a rather lucky third, for it appeared as if Callapat’s rider was careless over the last few yards. The favourite, Tunbridge, was never going kindly and it appeared as if he did not relish the going. The success of Davistock in the Maiden Race was the first of three wins scored by horses from O. Cox’s Hawera stable' during the afternoon. The imported gelding was a warm favourite and justified the optimism of his supporters by winning nicely. Jadarino tried to wiu all the way but found one just too good for her. Goy might be ticked off as a likely sort in similar eompanv, while Fairy Girl may also improve. Master Arausio stopped quickly when he was not persevered with. Bv winning the Juvenile Handicap Hampden added still another success for the season to the credit of the Wanganui owner, Mr. F. Bristol. It was not till fiftv vards from rhe post that Hampden, 'a liberal-priced favourite, caught the pacemaker, Furlong, but he won nieelv. Furlong, a cast-off from the Fordell stable, is ’.ow owned by Mr Joe Ratana, a son ot the Maori prophet. and the Acre gelding returned a dividend larger than that paid by the winner. Dakar, a half-brother by Nigger Minstrel to Thrift and Cadland. went well enough to suggest that he will be hard to beat in future engage ments. Paioneone was the only other to please. The Victory Hack Handicap was, appropriately 'enough, won by Invictus, the outsider of the field, whose apprentice rider had to put up 641 b overweight. This was no trouble to the Marton-owned and trained gelding, who scored his first success. Thrasher was well placed ill the way but had to be content with second place. Tigensm threatened to be dangerous at one stage and at the finish was only two lengths behind the winner Manawatu, who finished fourth, was well enough handled but might go more kindly for a stronger horseman. Neither Bon Eve nor Auctioneer appeared to have much chance. scored a rather unexpected w in in the Petre Hack Handicap for Mr. John Donald, of the Westmere Stud, though her owner did not let her run unsupported in spite of Trainer O. Cox’s pessimiotic view of her chances. An Austnsliin-bred filly by Top Gallant. Snrc-nran is destined for the matrons' paddock and she will have her

last race to-morrow. At one stage of the race Barbaean was ten lengths behind the leaders, but Barry rode her vigorously and managed to punch her home. Hystride appeared a certain winner a hundred yards from the judge, and he should be kept in mind. Haulbowline went a good race out in front with The Tiger, and it wa- through being kept up to his task maintaining the pace that The Tiger, a hot favourite, was defeated. Different tactics on another occasion might result in The Tiger making amends. Yesterday afternoon a splendid programme of music was provided at the races by the Wanganui Garrison Band under the baton of Mr. J. M. Watson, and was much appreciated by patrons. Topweights Pay Dividends. Even betting in the Westmere Hurdles saw Tunbridge (£146), Conjurer 11. (£143) and Callapat (£141) preferred to Royal Acre (£122). When they had settled down Callapat was several lengths in front of Just an Idea, Whisogne and Royal Acre, but pas the stands Whisogne was up with Callapat, followed by Royal Acre, but past the stands Whisogne was Tunbridge. There was little change in the order along the back stretch, where the field closed up a little, and at the three furlongs Royal Acre ran up to the leading pair. Callapat showed the way into the straight, however, being just ahead of Royal Acre, Conjurer 11. and Whisogne. Over the final stages Conjurer IL came away t?o win by five lengths from Royal Acre, while two lengths away Just an Idea beat Callapat by a head for third money. Tunbridge was fourth and Whisogne last. Maiden to Hot Favourite. . Investors plunged for Davistock I (£300) in the Maiden Race, with a big drop to Morrath (£203) and Master Arausio (£107), while Jadarino (£5B) was at close on double figures. Jadarino went to the front at the start, being followed by Jack Plane, Goy, Davistock, Fairy Girl and Morrath as they ran down the back stretch. Across the top and into the straight Jadarino, Goy, Fairy Girl, Davistock and Master Arausio were in the leading division. Once straightened up Davistock challenged Jadarino at the distance and came on to win by two lengths from Jadarino, with Goy a length and a-half back. Then camo Fairy Girl and Morrath, with Master Arausio following after a gap. Hampden Just Gets There. Hampden (£226) and Dakar (£202) were best backed for the Juvenile Handicap, with Furlong (£5B) at a long price. When the tapes went up Furlong was smartest away, being followed by Dakar, Headmaster, Paioneone, Hampden and Genesta. The order was much the same into the straight, but just when Furlong looked like coming away from his field Hampden dashed up and won in the last few yards by a head, with Dakar half a length away. Then came Paioneone, Headmaster and Amyril. Shrewd Wins Principal Race. Eleventh-hour course defections from the Earl Stakes field 'ere Monsogno and Arikira, and investors declared for Grand Jury (£227), High Falutin’ (£198) and King Colossus (£155), but the winner turned up in Shrewd (£135), who carired nearly twice as much as the second horse, Monalof. Out from the tapes the order was Mahora, King Colossus, Grand Jury and Monalof, but passing the stands Shrewd and Mahora were together in front of High Falutin’, Monalof, King Colossus, Flower, Grand Jury and Joie de Vai. High Falutin’ was rushed to the front before they reached the six furlongs, being just ahead of Mahora, Shrewd, King Colossus, Monalof and Grand Jury. High Falutin’ dropped back suddenly at the half-mile, where Monalof and Shrewd were in front of Mahora and Grand Jury, and the lastnamed was in third place as they swung round the turn for home. Shrewd had Monalof’s measure at the distance, but had to be kept at it to win by half a length. Grand Jury v as two lengths away, third, and Joie de Vai, Mahora. Flower and High Falutin’ was the order of the others. Victory for Invictus. Of the six starters in the Victory Hack Handicap Manawatu (£268) was preferred to Thrasher (£183), but the winner turned up in Invictus (£66), the outsider of the field. Thrasher and Invictus piloted the field out of the straight, and down the back they were followed by Manawatu and Tigerism. No change occurred across the top, but Tigerism moved up into third place on the turn. Invictus assumed the lead a hundred yards from home and held on to win by a length from Thrasher, with Tigerism another length back. Then came Manawatu, Bon Eve and Auctioneer. Barbacan’s Mild Surprise. The Tiger (£486) carried more than a third of the investments on -the Petro Hack Handicap, with Hystride (£446) next in demand and Barbaean (£142) comparatively neglected. They got away to a good start and The Tiger and Haulbowline went out to make the pace, being followed the back by Pass On, Hystride and Sanguine King. Half a mile from home The Tiger and Haulbowline were out

four lengths ahead of Hystride, Sanguine King and Pass On, with Barbaean five lengths behind that trio. Haulbowline was just in front of The Tiger as they swung round the turn for home, but over the final stages Barbaean finished fast and won by a neck from Hystride. Two lengths away was Haulbowline, just in front of The Tiger and Sanguine King. I View Halloo Wins the Sprint. The Flying Handicap drew but four starters, through the defection of Cadland, Laughing Prince and Lady Quex, and Hunting Cry (£447) was at a short price, with View Halloo (£119) at remunerative odds. Pomp, Hunting Cry and Juggle went away together, with View Halloo trailing behind the trio as they raced down the back stretch. Pomp was slightly ahead of Hunting Cry as they crossed the top, with Juggle just behind and View Halloo making a run through on the rails. When they streightened up View Halloo came on the outside of the leading pair to win convincingly by a length and a-half. Juggle, a length behind Hunting Cry, was in front of Pomp. ROTORUA SCRATCHINGS CASE OF SIR MOND PROTEST LODGED WITH CLUB The action of the stewards of the Rotorua Raying Club in cancelling , scratchings for the six races on the first day’s programme, which was postponed until Monday, forms the subject of a protest that has been lodged with the club by Mr. E. H. Cucksey. In forwarding the protest Mr. Cucksey wrote as follows: ‘‘On the ground that it seems open to question whether Sir Mond’s withdrawal on Saturday from the Mokoia Handicap at your fixture should not have barred him from competition, I, as the owner of Flying Prince, which ran second to Sir Mond when the race was decided on Monday, desire to protest against Sir Mond being entitled to rank as the winner and trust that some more definite understanding regarding scratchings will be the outcome of the objection raised in this ease. You, of course, realise that three horses, including Flying Prince, had already gone out to contest the Mokoia Handicap on Saturday prior to the day’s racing being postponed.” In the meantime the Mokoia Handicap stake-money has to be impounded until the objection is determined.
