CANAL ZONE MEMORIAL
WORK NEARLY COMPLETED. FAMOUS ACADEMICANS. LONDON, Oct. 12. It is understood that Sir Bertram Afackennal had practically completed the memorial to Australians and New Zealanders serving in the Canal zone, and intended for erection at Port Said. Sir Bertram Afackennal took over the work when Air. Webb Gilbert relinquished it five years ago. The slow progress is believed to bo due to the fact that he disliked the involved design showing Australian and New Zealand cavalrymen side by side, one on a falling wounded horse and the other on a rearing charger. Sir Bertram Afackennal was the only man whose initials, tho tiny “B.M. ” at the base of the King’s neck, were allowed to appear on coins of the realm. His great friends were Sir William Orpen and Afr. C. Ricketts. All three famous Academicians died within a few days of each other, Sir W. Orpen on September 30 and Afr Ricketts on October 8.
