DOMINION DAY IN SYDNEY
The New Zealand Women’s Association in New South Wales celebrated Dominion Day at a luncheon held in Sydney recently. Mrs. W. W. Pilkington, vice-presi-dent of the associatiou, presided, and Airs. Stanley Hempton, president, was the guest of honour. Several toasts were honoured. “Tho Dominion” was proposed by Dr. J. 8. Purdy and Air. L. J. Schmitt, the New Zealand Trade Commissioner, responded. Included in his remarks was some very interesting information covering the earlier history of New Zealand as compared with the present day. A toast to tho guest of honour was proposed by Airs. Pilkington, while Air. Schmitt, on behalf of the association, presented Airs. Hempton with a beautiful silver cake basket suitably inscribed. The guest of honour made a brief speech in reply. Air. Cecil Crocket, secretary of the New Zealand Association of New South Wales, proopsed tho toast of “Tho Commonwealth.” and Air. Ernest Afarks, ex-Lord Afayor of Sydney, replied and emphasised the hope that tho day was not far distant when further efforts would be made for reciprocal tariff arrangements between the Dominion and the Commonwealth. A cabled message was received from tho Prime AHnistcr of Now Zealand, Air. Forbes, conveying his congratulations and greetings to tho New Zealand women on the occasion of their celebrating Dominion Day.
