U.A.O.D. RITUAL COMPETITION A contest for the Oldfield Ritual Shield ’’’took place in tho Presbyterian Hall on Thursday evening, when Mackay Lodge, Taihape, holders of the trophy, were challenged by Miro Lodge (Raetihi) for the right to hold the shield. Morgan Lodge (Marton) had intended sending a team, but owing to the prevailing influenza epidemic, had been compelled to withdraw at tho last minute. A very even contest ended in a narrow win for the visitors. At the conclusion of the contest P.D.P, Bro. Vincent, of Alackay Lodge, congratulated the winners, and assured them that Afackay Lodge would make a firm endeavour to regain the shield next timo. D.P. Bro. McCormick, then presented Bro. Murphy, A.D. of tne winning team, with the shield, and congratulated him on the team’s succeed. Bro. Murphy responded. Supper was then served, and the remainder of the evening was spent in playing indoor bowls, knidly lent by Aliro Lodge, and ping pong. The following were the teams: —Miro (Raetihi): A.D., Bro. (The above report hns been kindly, supplied to the “Chronicle” by Afr N. J. Finlayson). ALLEGED ARSON At an early hour on Friday morning a house at Afataroa occupied by Afr C. W. St. Clair was burned to the ground and two motor lorries parked near the house wore extensively damaged. The sequel to the fire followed at Taumarunui on Sunday afternoon when St. Clair was arrested on a charge of arson. He appeared before the Court at Taumarunui yesterday and was remanded to appear at Taihape on October 8. CHARITY BALL Arrangements in connection with the Charity Ball to be held in tho Town Hall on Thursday, October 1, have practically been finalised and patrons can bo assured of a most enjoyable evening’s entertainment. Carrington’s Orchestra, specially augmented for the occasion, will provide tho music. Plain or fancy dress may be worn. The ball is a masked one and there-
fore all patrons must wear masks. The proceeds will be devoted to the relief of distress in Taihape and therefore it behoves everybody to make a special effort to attend and thus assist a very worthy cause.
