WANGANUI WEST CLUB NEW SEASON OPENS ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON. The weather on Saturday morii.ng was decidedly unpleasant, tuo steady rain which, fell uulu late in the morning making the outlook the reverse ut pleasing lor the opening of the Wanganui West Bowiing Club’s season. However, tne weather cleared somewhat towards noon and though iuoiu rain threatened later ru the day' it kept off. A large gathering ol bowlers and. the club’s luuy supporters assisted members of the Wanganui West Club to celebrate the occasion with ail due ceremony. The president of the club, Captain White, expressed pleasure at the satisfactory attendance of members and friends and said he uoped the season would prove a successful one. Hu then called upon the Deputy Mayor (Mr F. Symes) to declare the season open. Mr Symes said that it gave him great pleasure to accede to tne request of the president. The Wanganui West Bowling Club was a valuable asset to Castleviiff and members were tv bo congratulated on having such a splendid green. Its condition for opening day was remarkably good and reflected great credit on the custodian, Mr Watson, and members who had put in so much work to nave everything in readiness for the enjoyment of the players. Mr Symes referred to the fact chat Captain White and. his clubmates always made visitors to the green feel at home, and the line sociable spirit displayed has done much to popularise tho club. In this connection ho said, the ladies were deserving of great praise, particularly Mrs White, who had attended the green on practically every playing day and supervised the arrangements for afternoon tea —an outstanding feature at all week-end games. Mr Symes went on to say that he hoped the club would have a most successful season, and ho then vailed upon Mrs White to throw the first jack, which that lady did well and tru.y to the accompaniment of cheers. The green was then formally declared open and a start was made with the games, which were limited to 16 heads, and proved very enjoyable, tho excellence of the playing surface being favourably commented upon. The dainty afternoon tea provided by the ladies was done full justice to, and at the conclusion of the play visiting bowlers returned hearty thanks fur the very enjoyable afternoon’s outing.
