Definite confirmation of Japanese aeroplanes machine-gunning passenger trains evacuating •civilian and refugees from Mukden is furnished in tho report of the British Consul-General at Tientsin by Mr Thomson, general manager of the Peking-Mukden railway. MANCHURIAN TERRITORY JAPAN HAS NO DESIGNS. Received Sept. 27, 5.5 p.m. WASHINGTON, Sept. 26. M. Debuchi, Japanese Consul, presented the State Department with a memorandum asserting that Japan has no designs upon Manchurian territory. “What we desire is that Japanese subjects be enabled to engage safely in peaceful pursuits and be given an opportunity to participate in the develop merit of Manchuria,” ho said. Tho note charged Chinese officials and individuals with so conducting themselves as to irritate Japanese sentiment, provoking an atmosphere of “perturbation and anxiety.” Tho Consul added: “The Japanese’ Government is prepared to co-operate with the Chinese Government to prevent a disastrous situation between the two countries.” JAPANESE MURDERED OUTRAGES AT HONGKONG. BRITISH TROOPS CALLED OUT Received Sept. 27, 11.50 p.m. HONGKONG, Sept. 27. The anti-Japaneso disturbances reached their most serious aspect on Saturday evening, necessitating the calling out of the Sutherland Highlanders in Kowloon district, where crowds of thousands of Chinese sought out Japanese households Ono Japanese family consisting of tho parents and three children, were brutally massacred. In other instances Japanese were murdered in the streets and women stripped naked. The Argylls wore compelled to make bayonet charges. SUDDEN SUBSIDENCE QUESTION OF RESPONSIBILITY SHANGHAI, Sept. 25. The Manchurian crisis appears to have subsided as suddenly as it arose. To-day’s despatches are almost entirely confined to discussion of the responsibility for the events. The tension is plainly relaxing and there is an almost complete absence of military news. A Tientsin message says that the Japanese are holding General Tsangshihyi, civil Gvoernor of Fengtien Province, and aro demanding his signature to a document admitting responsibility for the Manchurian events. Tho General is reported to be hunger striking. LEAGUE’S PRESTIGE SLIGHTED BY JAPAN NEGOTIATING DIRECT. GENEVA, Sept. 25. An unpleasant slight to tho League’s prestige occurred when the Japanese representative announced that Japan was settling the Manchurian dispute by direct negotiations, to which China refuses to assent. The delegate notified from Tokio that Japanese troops, with the exception of a few guards, had been withdrawn from tho occupied area. PROTECTION OF NATIONALS JAPANESE CRUISER SAILS Received Sept.. 27, 5.5 p.m. TOKIO, Sept. 26. In view of increasing violence against Japanese in southern China, involving the calling out of British troops at Hongkong, the cruiser Tsushima departed on Saturday morn ing for the protection of residents at Shanghai.
