PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY

(By “Kestrel.’’) The principal centre of interest today will be the Avondale Guineas, in which the issue is generally accepted as being between Bronze Eagle and Croupier. The fojrmer will be ridden by H. Gray, who scored on Croupier in the Wanganui Guineas and must have a fairly good opinion of the capabilities of the Surveyor colt. The fact that Croupier, with all the advantage of the handicap, could omy finish second in the Flying Stakes on Saturday, beaten two lengths by Manawhenua, must be the reverse of pleasing to those who were prepared to lay odds on the Wanganui Guineas winner, on whom H. N. Wiggins will have the mount. Against Bronze Eagle is the fact that he will be having his first race this season, whereas his rival has had the benefit of four races since the beginning of August. It must be remembered that last season Bronze Eagle started five times for four wins. His victories included a six lengths’ win over Uratunan and High Comedy in the Plunket Nursery at Trentham and a win by two lengths over Cricket Bat and Richborough in the Pacific Handicap at the same meeting, while at Ellerslie he beat High Comedy and Baroscope in the Champagne Stakes, intervals of three lengths separating the trio. Bronze Eagle concluded his two year-old career by beating Supremacy and Lady Quex by a short neck and half a length respectively in the All Aged Stakes at Avondale in soft going. As there was only 131 b difference in the weights ho must be given credit for a fine performance. Croupier's record has been extensively dealt with. Uther performers who should be prominent are the For-dell-trained View Halloo, and those promising three-year-olds Baroscope, 'King Colossus, High Comedy and Gol- ; den Wings. The following are likely to be well supported to-day:— The result was as follows:—N. AnderMonetize. Nursery Handicap.—Broken Rule, Rulanut. Mount Albert Handicap.—Lord Vai, Haulbowline, Great Emblem. Plumpton Handicap. Cessation, Maori Boy, Lady Pam. Avondale Guineas.—Bronze Eagle, Croupier, View Halloo. President’s Handicap.—Orapai, Lady Quex, Kozan. New Lynn Handicap.—Air Laddie, Taurua, Catch ’Em. Nihotapu Handicap.—Pewa, Prince Vai, Puriri Park.
