Air J. S. King, New Plymouth, hai been appointed referee for the Canterbury- Wellingftpn Ranfurly Shield Rugby match at Wellington on Saturday. Guests registered at Foster’s Hotel last night were: Alcssrs L. M. Taylor, W. L. Clabburn, T. C. Johansen (Wellington); Harry Cowper (Dannevirke), F. G. Baskctt, Winstone, F. Bowler (Auckland); A. H. R. Arness (Stratford); J. S. Tingey (Fcilding). Air W. Adams was appointed to represent the Wanganui Education Board on the Wanganui Unemployment Committee in place of the chairman, Mr W. A. Collins, who cannot find time to attend the meetings. Air W. F. Morrissey, of Hawera, has been appointed to the charge, of the Hawera office of the Taranaki Farmers’ Afutual Fire Insurance Association and the New Zealand State Fire Insurance Oflice, in succession to the late Air 8. E. Corry. Air Alorrissey, who has been accountant for the firm' of R. P. Alorrissey and Co. for the, last twelve years, takes up his new duties as from September 1. At yesterday’s meeting of the Wan-j ganui Education Board a motion of dolcnce with the widow’ and family of the late Air C. 11. Warden w’as carried in silence and members paid great tributes to the deceased gentleman’s capabilities as a teacher and character builder. The speakers were the chairman (Mr W. A. Collins), Air W. Adams, Air W. G. Blackie (Chief inspector) and Air W. H. Swanger (secretary). When resignations were accepted at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board special mention was made of the service rendered by two teachers—Alessrs D. A. AlcPhcrson, headmaster, Raetihi, and W. J. Afotcalfc, assistant, Queen’s Park. Mr McPherson has been in the board’s employ for a long period and was at one time head teacher at Durio Hill. Air Alctcalfc had rendered particularly lino service in regard to school music. It was decided to forward both gentlemen letters of appreciation and to express regret that they were leaving the board’s service. At yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Hospital Board the resignation of Airs E. A. Dexter, honorary welfare officer, was accepted with regret. The chairman, Air Broderick, said that Mrs Dexter might feel a little bit hurt with the Board, but he could assure her that there was never any ill-feeling towards her. He moved that the Board's appreciation of Airs Dexter’s services )n the past should be placed on record. She had been a tower of strength tx> the needy. Individually Airs Dexter would be helping the needy and in that work would be helping the Board to a certain extent. Airs Siddclls seconded the motion, emphasising all that had been said. The motion was carried. Air Hugh K. Whittington, one of the pioneer settlers of Haw’era, and a former Mayor of that town, died on Saturday. As a master builder, Air Wnittington, who arrived at Hawera in J 880, saw much of the development of town. Born in 1853 at Coates, Sussex, Air Whittington came to New Zealand at the age of 20, landing in Wellington, where he resided for about seven years. Mr Whittington’s wife died some years ago, and he lost, in the war, his youngest son, Horace, who was killed on Gallipoli, where he went with the Main Body. Air Whittington is survived by two sons— Mr H. J. Whittington (a New Zealand and Taranaki representative Rugby footballer, and later a referee) and Mr C. Whitington (a railway inspector in Nigeria)—and six daughters — Mcsdames W. Hartwell (Wanganui), H. J. Eaves (Inglewood), C. jL, Harvev (Lower Hutt), C. J. MeFad- ' yen (Hawera), Misses W. Whittingtun (New Plymouth), and A. Whittingtun (Hawera).
