EDUCATION BOARD

THE MONTHLY MEETING GENERAL BUSINESS AND REPORTS The Wanganui Education Board met yesterday, Mr W. A Collins presiding. There were also present: Messrs W. Adams, J. S. Tingey, J. K. Hornblow, R. Dukeson, E. F. Hemingway, W. R. Woodruff, A. S. Coleman and M. H. Oram. The Education Department notified a grant for making alterations to the brick building of the Patea School.— Received. Mr Dukeson reported regarding suitable ground for horse accommodation at Mangaonoho and it was decided to forward the matter on for the Department’s approval. Correspondence was received relatives to the use of the teacher’s room at Waverlcy for a dental clinic. The chairman expressed himself as against the room being used for this purpose. The secretary pointed out that the conditions were that the room was to be vacated whenever it was required by the teacher. The application of the head-teacher, Whenuakura, for a shelter over the back door of the residence was favourably reported upon by the architect and his report adopted. The board approved of an application for materials to lay down a concrete path at the teacher’s residence, Ford ell. Complaints were received of the condition of the teacher’s residence at Taihape. It was resolved that the board carry out the usual maintenance work and that the department be apI plied to for a grant to effect repairs. Chairman’s Report. i The chairman reported on the past month’s work as follows: “Works.—The quotation of Messrs IX A. Morrison and Co. of £l2 15s has been accepted for installing electric light in the teacher’s residence for the new native school at Kauangaroa. “The architect reports as follows: Work completed: *anganui East. — The whole of the work in connection with the distempering of the interior 'walls of the brick building has been /completed. Raumai.—The school, residence and outbuildings have all been ■ painted in two coats to the exterior. I The interior of the school has been I similarly dealt with. Three rooms of the interior of the residence have been re-papered and the bathroom painted. Pohangina.—The teacher’s residence, the school building, and all outbuildings have been painted. Two rooms of the residence have been re-papered. Central School.—lmprovements to the lavatory accommodation have been carried out at the temporary classrooms, and comprise the following: At Adler’s Garage, a temporary building was erected, and three pedestal closets installed for the girls’ use, and two for the boys, together with siv feet of prinal. At the Church of Christ, a temporary building was erected, and one washdown pedestal closet installed. At Clark’s shops, a urinal was installed and a temporary cover erected. At all these temporary premises the paths and yards have been gravelled and condtiions under foot made reasonably comfortable. Westmere.—ln connection with the water supply to the out offices, it has been necessary because of the drifting sand, to erect ■ a brick and concrete storage tank as ( a catchment from the spring, and to alter the supply from the original we 1 ! to the new tank. Tapuae.—Repairs ; have been effected to the school and i outbuildings in readiness for painting I work, which will be executed before ' the re-opening of this school. Woi(tuna West.—A chip heater and new ' wash-basin has been installed in the bathroom of the teacher’s residence, . and minor repairs to spouting effect- ■ ed. “Works in Hand.—Kauangaroa New j School: The work in connection with I the erection of the native school, teacher’s residence, and outbuildings, is now ' well advanced and about ten days : should see the completion of all the (woodwork. The buildings should be wholly completed early in September, but the condition of the grounds may prevent their occupation until the summer months. Central Infants’: The work in connection with the removal of the tower and other heavy or overhanging embellishments and tne tying of the building, is now nearing completion. Mt. Richard’s Road.—The painters have in hand the painting of the school and outbuildings. Brick buildings: Iron work is in preparation for the strengthening of Wanganui East, Aramoho, Marton D.H. and GonI ville, and it is proposed to carry out the work at each of these buildings in ' the order named. “Proposed for Ensuing Month. —To carry on with the works in hand. Upper Tutaenui: To carry out repairs and make extensions to drainage. Mam Trunk: To carry out repairs to various Alain Trunk Schools. Foxton: To reroof portion of the main school building and carry out repairs.

“Workshop. —The shop is working with a reduced staff, but is keeping pace with the work offering. The staff consist of:—Carpenters 6; painters 3; apprentices 4; bricklayer 1; plumber 1; motor drivers 2; labourers 1; total 18.

“No 5 Scheme.—Under the No. 5 Scheme, we are employing 13 men, the majority of these being engaged in levelling work at the Health Camp. Others on drainage work at Kauangaroa, and one at the Central Infants’ or cleaning up. “Castlecliff.—The work in connection with the erection of the school swimming baths is nearing completion. This work has been done mainly under No. 5 Scheme. The weather during the past few weeks has been such as to severely hamper the progress of works, and much which one desired to put inland )as, in consequence of th. wcJV A the - / h a d to be postponed. —The following r>

signations of teachers have been received since last meeting:—Air D. A. AfcPherson, head teacher, Raetihi; Mr H. H. Smith, sole teacher, Rata-iti; Mr IV. J. Afetcalf, assistant, Queen’s Park; Mr F. J. Stockman, sole teacher, Koeke Junction. “Late Air C. H. Warden—lt is with regret I have to report the death .if Air C. H. Warden, headmaster of the Wanganui East School, which occurred on July 31—his 61st birthday. The late Air Warden was in the board’s service for many years, and proved himself an efficient teacher, an organiser of outstanding ability. & keen promoter of athletics and sports m all their branches, and an excellent citizen. We can ill afford to lose men of the late Mr Warden’s calibre. “Married Women Teachers. —Attached you will find a copy of the Declaratory Judgment of Air Justice Herdman in regard to the interpretation of Section 34 of the Finance Act., 1931 (No. 2), which deals with the question of the board’s powers >n connection with the appointment of married women teachers. ”
