TORNADO IN FRANCE
GREAT DAMAGE DONE FEARS FOR R.tciNG YACHTS PARIS, Aug. 10. Serious violent thunderstorms, which occurred throughout France during the week-end and which caused great damage and floods and several deaths, culminated in a tornado at Toulon, following four months' drought. The terrific wind blew a motor car fro- a street into a shop window, overturned a hearse carrying a coffin, killed a boy cyclist and flattened vineyards. Roads were washed away and communications destroyed, preventing complete news of the havoc. There was a heavy death-roll among pleasure boats and fishing vessels, whi< li set ff in a calm sea and under a blue sky and which were overwhelmed by huge waves. Over fifty people are missing. Thirteen bodies have been washed ashore. There is great anxiety for the yachts participating in the Marseilles-Corsica race, including two British and French. A torpedo boat is now making a search.
