FAREWELL TO ATHLETE STAN LAY AT HAWERA On Saturday Mr S. A. Lay, who is leaving the Hawera district to reside in Stratford, was farewelled by members of the Athletic Football Club and Old Boys’ Cricket Club at a smoke concert and dinner held at Hawrnra, Mr Lay having been a foundation member of both clubs. On behalf of the Athletic Football Club, Mr A. IL Guy presented Mr Lay with a tea set, eulogising him as an honest, straight-living athlete, who was held in high esteem. Air C. Dowdle, on behalf of the Cricket Club,, presented Air Lay with a supper set. referring to him as the captain and the hardest worker both clubs possessed. In reply, Air Lay said that although he was leaving Hawera his heart would always be with the two clubs, and they would always be his own clubs. He referred to the hard struggle the Athletic Football Club had had and thanked Air A. H. Guy on behalf of the footballers for his interest and coaching this year. Under Air Guy’s coaching he felt sure that the team -would eventually attain provincial honours. The following toasts were honoured: Amateur Athletic Club (Air P. C. Coleman—Air R. Lendrum), Old Boys’ Cricket Club (Air ('. Harrison—Air L. V. Walker), Athletic Football Club (Air J. Palmer—Mr A. H. Guy), the hostess, Airs Walden (Mr Lay—Alr Setford).
