ROADS IN THE COUNTRY The Waimarino County engineer, Mr H. L. Hogg, has reported that motor traffic is causing considerable damage to the clay section of the Pipiriki Road and deep ruts are formed over practically the whole section. Tenders for further metalling should be called early in the season in the endeavour to complete the unmetalled gap to the Huikumu Road junction during the coming season. The stream diversion at Scott s Bridge, Mangaetoroa Road, is now com plete, and the filling across the gully will be put in hand as soon as convenient. The road line round the section of the road proposed tu be re-grad-ed has been cleared and will be pegged off at the earliest opportunity. The further proposals for the improvement of this road will be investigated and the necessary data obtained. The metal is being widened and brought to shape on the backed section of the Valley Road. The wet weather, however, is interfering w’ith the work, which, so far, has been intermittent. The removal of the wooden cover to the open cut near the crusher will be put in hand when the weather conditions are more favourable. The access leading to the Horopito Post Office has been improved. The engineer proposes widening dangerous corners on Harris’ deviation and diverting the road at the sharp bend on Valley Road by relief workers. A large culvert will be necessary at the deviation on the Manganic Valley Road unless it is possible to tunnel. An additional workman is being employed part time on the matahiwi Road, but wet weather, however, will prevent any very effective work being done.
