ROYAL ENGAGEMENT

Tho engagement is officially announced of Lady May Cambridge, niece of the Queen, who returned from South Africa a few months ago with her father and mother, the Earl of Athlone, and Princess Alice, to Captain Henry Abel-Smith, of the Royal Horse Guards. Tho marriage will probably take place in October. Captain Smith served as A.D.C. to the Earl of Athlone in South Africa, and is a popu ar member of an old and wealthy family. Lady May and her parents left London to-night on a visit to Hol and. A.D.C. TO EARL OF ATHLONE LONDON, August 7. The engagement is confirmed of Lady May Cambridge, niece of the Queen, to Captain Henry Abel-Smith, of the Horse Guards, who was A.D.C. to the Earl of Athlone when he was Governor-General of South Africa. Captain Smith is 32 and Lady May Cambridge 25. Captain 11. Abel-Smith was in South Africa as A.D.C. to the Earl of Athlone, Lady May Cambridge’s father, when he was Governor-General of that Dominion. Captain Abel-Smith was previously a lieutenant in the Royal Horse. Guards (“The Blues”), receiving his lieutenancy in 1921.
