MASSEY COLLEGE

VISITORS FROM WANGANUI FARMERS’ INSPECTION DAIRY RESEARCH WORK. About, fifty Wanganui farmers yesterday visited. Alassey. College, Palmerston North, the trip being organised by the Wanganui branch of the Manawatu Herd-testing Association. Arriving at the College at one o’clock the party inspected the main buildings, and the men were then conducted over the dairy section of the grounds. Many of the men were accompanied by their wives who also inspected subjects of interest 1o them at the College. The districts represented were Brunswick, Okoia, Fordell, Makirikiri and Wangaehu. After seeing the main building, the party was shown over the different paddocks, the treatment of each being explained. They saw the results of harrowing the pastures, the results of different manures, and all through the afternoon questions were asked freely. The cow-bail was a centre of great interest, being very complete and having novelty in some of its appointments. The treatment of cows was dealt with, and the alleviation of their ills formed the subject of many questions and discussion. The party continued on towards the river, seeing how the different grades of land were treated. The feeding of winter fodder was dealt with, and then the piggeries were seen. Each pig, like each paddock, had some point of definite interest. Their feeding and their upbringing was the subject of a number of interesting remarks by the expert. Before leaving after four o’clock the party went through the dairy factory, and inspected the machinery for the making of butter and cheese. Although it was unfortunate that there were examinations in progress at the College. the farmers left with what had to be of necessity only a small con ception, but with a high appreciation of the efforts to improve farming, on one of the most important farms in the Dominion.
