Gwen Loses Her Mount
, The Professor gave a very full explanation o( how to uork the mechanical horse* ; end Gwen really thought she knew all about it, she proceeded quite confidently io make I the steed move. "That’s excellent,” said the Professor, when she touched the knob that set the hoist I walking gently round the field. “It really is,” Poll) agreed. ‘‘l shouJd like to see her make him run." said Richard.
The longer Gwen rode the horse the more confident she got, until at last she decide* to make him got a bit faster. So she pressed the knob that made him canter, and «h* really rode very well. In fact she did so well that Richard felt quite jealous about it. "Now he's going splendidly,” shouted G W en, “Tally ho!” "I certainly shall enter him for the Darby,” cried the Professor.
Gwen would undoubtedly have descended from her mount in triumph, hut for the fact ■ that something happened! She forgot whie, was the right key to press to stop the j horse, and unfortunately pressed the one tha. made him gallop. Off went the nuchanu d I stce<l at such a pace that Fanny the foal lh )U ght Gwen was racing and joined in! G«rn I kept her seat wonderfully, but was greatly worried when she saw a hedge light in noni
C | But Gwen wasn’t to be heaten easily. She remembered the ke> th.< mad- 1 ih* mechanical horse jump, and pressed it just at the right moment. The horse flew over the hedge like a bird! Even Fanny the foal had to admire the way he took it. I nlortun ately it was the first jump Gwen had ever experienced, and the result was that •h< fell off. "My!” she cried, as she flew over the horse’s tail, "Who is going to slop him now.’”
A little later the Professor and the chums found Gwen sitting under the hedge, robbing some large bumps on her head, and looking very concerned about herself. "What have you done with fhc horse?" asked the Professor. “What have 1 done with the horse?" snapped Gwen. "You should ask what has he done to me! I’m covered with bruises." "Oh dear me,” said the Professor, "I never thought you would lose him.”
lam afraid the mechanical horse will not run again for a long time! When the l*r» fessor and the chums followed the road he ha 1 taken, they came to a large pond, and close by they saw Fanny the foal kicking her heels in high glee. "It looks as if the horse must have r in right into the pond." said the Professor. 1 ain airaid that is just what did ha ,, ''' , »! Some day the Professor is going to get him out and put him right again, but he will ha <• a job to get cither Gwen oi Richard to rije his invention any more! £
