NECESSARIES 01- LIFE Bir,- Ln reading through your col umns about ways and means of assist ing the unemployed and their families various suggestions have been launched which arc certainly equivalent to the battleship, late war, earthquake, or any national calamity, which has happened with its results. Prevention is better than cure. As winter is coming to hand with its black clouds upon tho horizon, but it’s pleasing to know our public bodies and committees are taking a lead and are out to help those that help themselves, and as our Premier, Air Forbes, has stated, co-operation between private, public bodies and Government will help to assist matters. A.s the necessaries of life should be the first consideration, we should do and give of our best through these bodies. Produce, meat, potatoes, butter and cheese, are plentiful and cheap, and the labourers are plentiful; that being so, these bodies should unite to demand the duties to be taken off wheat to enable the bakers again lo produce a cheaper loaf of bread, and our Government to commandeer meat, potatoes, bread, butter and cheese, for the committees in their own districts at cost price, each to be responsible to its head and pay its own expenses. Now, Sir, 1 think if we cannot find money and work for those men that want same, and have paid their levy, we should start right away with a scheme to provide sustenance. ISAAC GIBBS, Castlecliff.
