BAKER’S CROSSING FATALITY I’ALL FROM \ TRAIN. .1 ailing t rom ’he Wanganui section • thr Auckland Limited Express yesterday. at Baker’s Crossing, between Marton a--J Wanganui, Mr P. Matthews, a guard, was killed almost instant!v. On reaching the hill approaching tie' crossing, it was found necessary to di vide the train into two sections and when one section had been brought to the top the body of the deceased man was discovered. It is not known how the ac- ident occurred or what caused it. The body was found with the face and head dug into the gravel. Ir is supposed that this was caused by connecting with one of the axle boxes on the waggons. The hospital ambulance was summoned and conveyed the body to the morgue. The late Mr Matthews had been in the railway ,<er\ice for 17 years. For eight years hi* had been stationed at Mario.i. He leaves a wife and child.
