TEMPERANCE WORK
WANGANUI EAST MEETING | At Wanganui Last, in St. Alban’s Church, the monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held last Thursday afternoon. The president was in the chair. One new member was initiated. As it was ‘‘White Ribbon'' Dav. a paper was read, in which Mrs Perry man, editress, urged all to support the official organ of the W.C.T.U., and that members try to secure new subscribers. An interesting extract from “The World’s Wet War” (Guy Taylor) was read, in which it was pointed out that the temperance movement in Japan was progressing by leaps and bounds. There was even talk that it would be the next nation to outlaw the liquor traffic. The National Temperance League reported that there were now 1658 societies in the Empire, an increase of 500 on rhe year. It was re ported by the National .Student Temperance League that branches had been established in sixty-four of the principal colleges and that in the great engineering school at Kobe, and at the Higher Grade School at Kanazawa, the) authorities required every student, on entering the lirst year, to sign the teni perance pledge. Work was also being done in th« universities along similar lines. It is expected that Mr S. Al. Dixon will be present at the July meeting in’ order to give a report, of rhe New Zea ' land Alliance Conference now sitting! jn Wellington. The meeting closed with the Bene diction.
