WOMEN AND BRIDGE
REBUKE IN SYDNEY. MRS J. A. LYONS’ VIEWS. A suggestion by Mrg J. A. Lyons, I wife of the Leader of the new Federal Opposition Party, to Sydney feminists hint women could help in tho solution 'of Australian prob enis by dexoting to I I hem the time and brain power they I now devote to bridge problems is | strongly supported in Sydney—among j the men. A correspondent says:—“As for the j j women, they arc saying that the same ' ! result might be achieved if tho men [devoted less time to talk and to blam-[ ' ing one another for the mess. They ' I might retort that the feminine absorption in bridge is partly due to the i ’women having been shut out of active politics by male prejudice. However, in I ’his they would miss the point which j Mrs Lyons sought to emphasise, whichwas that in times of crisis women must j not be mere feminists, but citizens, and must adopt the wider viewpoint cm- ' braced in the conception of citizen- ■ ship. ” Tho contention of Mrs Lyons was I that women’s energies ought not to bo ; dissipated in pursuing purely feminine aims, but should be directed toward making the world a better place fori both men and women.
