HUNTER VILLE

GENERAL NEWS On Friday night members of the Girls’ Club entertained Miss Al. Hoss at a ’’kitchen evening” on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Many useful gifts were presented and during the evening Miss Jean Gordon, on behalf of members of the club, presented Miss Ross with a kitchen china set. Dancing, competitions and musical items helped to pass a very pleasant evening. Work is proceeding on the Ongo Stream diversion, and the erection of the bridge has been commenced. Further work straightening the creek near tho bowling green will permit of a footpath being formed to the greens from Bruce Street. This street will be greatly improved, and the approach to the playing areas cau be beautified if sufficient enthusiasm exists. RUGBY FOOTBALL SENIOR COMPETITION HALCOMBE DEFEAT HUNTERVILLE Wintry weather conditions prevailed on Saturday, when on the local ground, Hunterville suffered their second defeat at tho hands of the recently elevated Halcombo fifteen to tho tune of 12 points to 5, after a fairly interesting game. Halcombo had the better of play throughout, and in the second spell had tho local team penned in their territory practically the whole time. The Hunterville rearguard were slightly better than their opponents, but the visiting fowards effused more dash into the play and carried tho day. Tho spin of the coin favoured Halcombe (yellow and black* and they elected to defend tho lower goal. Huntcrville (maroon) kicked off, and loose play ensued in midfield, from where Walker broke away with the ball at his too and losing. From tho line out tho visitors took play in a ragged rush to tho red line, where a scrummage was ruled, and the yellow weight carried the formation over for Ross to fall on tho ball. Saywell’s kick was charged down to save the evening of points. —Hunterville 5, Halcombo 3. Hunterville took play to find touch at the mid-way flag. Halcombo went again to dangerous territory, but Hayward relieved, and played worked down field to the yellow territory, where Watt set the maroon backs in motion, but though in striking distance, diagonal running by the five-eighths failed to gain much ground, and the winger was pushed into touch just inside the twenty-five line. Possession was backed up by Bartlett and C. Mclntyre, who took the leather across under the posts for the former to touch down. Watt converted comfortably, putting Hunterville five points up in the first three minutes. Hunterville continued to attack, getting the ball from set scrummages, but the backs failed to penetrate. A sortie at tho yellow twenty-five saw C. Mclntyre break away and take the ball over at his toe, but only to be beaten to the touch dow’n. From the resultant drop-out yellow took play upfield into tho maroon twenty-five, where a free was awarded them at a difficult angle. Clapham’s kick went wide. Watt secured from a set scrum and passed to Hayward who cut in and handed to Peidy, who gather in a difficult pass well and threw to Whetton, who missed tho ball on the line. The half-time whistle sounded with the local fifteen on the offensive. Halcombe’s chances were looking rosy, with only two points in arrear. and the grade and wind in their favour, and at the kick off the yellow pack took play immediately to the red twenty-five. Good work by Cameron relieved, but not for long, the yellow forwards playing a very willing game and forcing tho maroons back. Stewart, at full, had plenty to do, and his coolness and line-kicking stood Hunterville in good stead. Tho yellow forwards repeatedly changed play to the red line, but solid defence held the citadel against the siege time and again, until from loose play in the maroon area Hayward gained possession and punted up-field, where Anderson, the yellow custodian, gathered and found the uprights with a splendid field goal. Halcombo 7. Hunterville 5. Halcombe continued on the offensive, and shortly after a good forward movement saw the visitors on the line and a forward pick up to dive over. Anderson converted from the side line, with a beautiful kick.—Halcombe 12, Hunterville 5. Shortly after Mr J. H. Hardie sounded the final whistle.
