SPANISH POLITICS

One of the first acts under the Re public::'.: regime has been the granting to Catalonia of a separate constitution, approximating to home rule on the status of the British Dominions in relatica to the Mothe r Country. The people of Catalonia are apparentiy satisfied with this concession, and th Republican Government can congratulate it self upon having silenced, for the present at least, one of tnc most trouble some portions of Spain. The new Ad ministration is, however, only begin ning its work of bringing the Spanish together as a nation unified in the true sense of the word. Republican sentiment is undoubtedly the strongest force in Spanish politics, but it is represented by many different parties and races, from the Socialists, the ‘‘New Indus trinlists.” and the “Intellectuals’.'’ to. the traditional, die-hard Republicans who have always resented what the\ i regarded as the tyranny of the Spanish monarchical system. The restoration I o*' the Constitution and the holding ol i elections will help to stabilise the posi tion. and if a strong representative |, Government is elevated to power Spain ; may emerge from the revolution as a.' .i.'L C-'ratic Republic.
