CONSCIENCE MONEY

An item of eleven shillings, con- I science money, stands in pathetic isola 1 tion in the sum of £55,552 16s which 1 flowed into the coffers of the New Zealand Rugby Union during the tour of the British team. In so far as it marks the moral regeneration of even one poor worldling it is welcome, but it is a. question whether this particular penitent will not wish his money back when he sees what has happened to it. The balance-sheet of the tour, indeed, is calculated to esar the conscience of the habitual gatecrasher or fence climber, if it docs not draw 7 new recruits to the ranks. After the provincial unions had spent £23.500 on the conduct of the tour, including ho«ei entertainment £3674, the New 7 Zealand Rugby Union took a hand and managed to spend nearly £ll,OOO. in which the New Zen land selectors’ expenses alone came to a cool £6OO. This might be regarded as more or loss of a domestic matter, but for the, fact that the public, who have a right to be considered, were undoubtedly plundered when admission charges wore bring fixed. The opening of another season at a lime of great national depression suggests that if the Rugby Unions have any conscience they will nake some amends for an unpleasant exhibition of avarice by reducing the charges for admisison to club and interprovincial games in the current season. —Christchurch Star.
