PATEA GENERAL NEWS The glorious weather that has prevailed during the holidays has been availed of to the full in Patea, as elsewhere. The beach has been crowded from morning till dark while all the cottages have their full complements of occupants. This augurs well for New Year’s Dav. when a special gala day is to bo held by the Beach Improvement Society. The life-saving shield will be contested for by four teams, and should attract a large crowd of swimming enthusiasts. . The IDomain also Ims had its lair share of visitors. Motorists camping there, have spoken highly of the facilities provided for their conifofrt. The Domain itself presents a very pleasing and inviting aspect, with its hills, covered with avenues of firs and other shade-giving trees, surrounding the green oval of the playing area. The tennis courts close, at hand, have also come in for a great deal of use, although several enthusiasts have travelled to the Hawcra tennis toarnament each day. The Domain on Boxing Day presented a very bright scene when there were present, about 800 people at the annual sports held by the local amateur athletic association. PATEA HOSPITAL Christmas Day at. the local public hospital was certainly one of rejoicing this year. Every thought was given for the comfort and happiness of the inmates. The nursing staff had spent many hours in decorating the wards and corridors and these now appear very gay. Great bowls of roses and other flowers adorn the hall stands, while each bedside locker is graced with a vase of beautiful, fragrant flowers. Multi-coloured streamers are hung everywhere. On Christmas morning, the AJayor and Alayoress (Air and Airs Ramsbottom) visited the hospital and distributed gifts to each afid all of the patients. The matron afterwards entertained Air and Airs Ramsbottom to morning tea. Others present at this joy-giving function were: Dr. and Afrs Simmons, and the Alisses Simmons. Mr C. R. Honeyfield (chairman of the Hospital Board), Afrs W. Patterson and

Miss Smith (former sisters of the hospital), and Aliss G. Taylor. The , season’s greetings were exchanged, and a beautiful Christmas cake cut. and . served round to visitors and patients. BRASS BAND A feature of tho sports last Friday was the items rendered by the local brass band. This musical combination showed marked improvement under the conductorship of Mr S. Moore. Several of the latest dance tunes were among tho selections played, and it must bo stated they brightened the gala atmosphere of the afternoon considerably. BEACH DAY New Year’s Day has long been looked forward to by the swimming enthusiasts of the town, and this year it should be more popular and successful than ever. Although the local turf and life-saving clubs have reached their second year only, they have already established a name for keenness and thoroughness on the west coast. Last year only one team competed for the life-saving shield, a Castlecliff team journeying to the Patea beach. Unfortunately for them, the local team had been better trained, and successfully kept the shield. This year, however, both Castlecliff and East End (New Plymouth) are sending teams, while the Patea club is entering two teams. Thus a keen and interesting contest is expected, and if this weather continues, a glorious day’s sport and outing should result. The competitions arc to be held in the surf, Alessrs Anderson and Cooper, of Wanganui, acting as judges for the shield competition, while Air F. S. AlcKenna will judge the march past. CARNIVAL DANCES The Town Hall management arranged the usual pictures and dance for both Christmas Eve and Boxing nights. Although that on Christmas Eve only continued until midnight, there was a large crowd of dancers present from Hawera, Waverley and the district. Streamers and confetti added a gay note to the occasion, the dancers seemingly enjoying themselves to the full. The dance on Boxing Day night was as gay and as well attended as the previous one, and gave more evidence as to the popularity of these functions. Two more are to be held this week, one on New Year’s Eve and another the following night.
