THE CIVIC THEATRE ”THE BORDER LEGION” “The Border Legion,” Zane Grey’s thrilling story of romance and outlawry in the early days of the West, has been brought to the talking screen as one of the most outstanding spectacular action dramas, so far filmed with dialogue. In addition to Richard Arlen and Fay Wray, in the leading romantic roles. Paramount’s “The Border Legion,” which will open its run at the Civic Theatre this evening, has the familiar and popular figure of Jack Holt playing his first talking Zane Grey role in the cast. Fay Wray has the only woman role of importance in the picture. Eugene Pallet to, has a role similar to the one he portrayed in “The A irgginian.” “The Border Legion” with the stellar cast of lead and character players is. without doubt, one of the most ambitious and best of the Western out-door talking films produced to date. “The Virginian.” Paramount’s first audible action drama of the out-doors initiated a great series of Westerns, filled with entertainment and true to the old and new traditions of the screen. The picture is particularly noteworthy because it brings back to Zane Grey dramas, the outstanding portrayer of Zane Grey roles of silent, picture days. Jack Holt. His speaking voice is as virile as his action has always been. BULLS GENERAL NEWS So successful was the Christmas car nival that another is being arranged for the New Year, when a Maori troupe of instrumentalists, singers and dancers will be engaged, and “Father Time” will make his appearance with suitable gifts fop the young folk. The kazoo band will again entertain the crowd, and a very happy time should be spent by all. Many old boys and oh] girls of the township are here at present, spending the holidays with the “old folk,” and very happy are, the reunions. Many other locals are visiting friends in other parts of the Dominion also. Amongst the many erstwhile Bulls residents holidaying here at present are Air and Airs F. Canning, now living in Dunedin; Aliss AV. Kemp and Air Les Kemp, of Hawke’s Bay; Alessrs Ron. Flower and Viv. Broughton, of Wellington; Air John Kearney, of Wanganui (the last-named, by the way, having recently passed his final in accountancy); and Air and Airs E. Whiteman, of Pahiatua. Palmerston races drew a fair number of local sports on Boxing Day, but good numbers went to Tangimoana and Aloana Roa, and the river also attracted many. Campers were thick, both on the river banks and at each beach. Air and Airs 11. A. Goodall are spend ing the holidays at Okanagon. Air and Mrs H. Hendry went to Alasterton; Airs J. AlanseH, Aliss Joan Alansel] and Air Roy AlanseH to Wellington; Messrs T. Mansell, A. Signal and G. Bertram to Okanagon; Air and Airs G. D. Flower to Wellington; and Air J. Coogan to Taihape. Mr Alf. Neale took Chief Savage and King Acre to New Plymouth, and both torses won races. It is his intention to stay in Taranaki until after the Stratford meeting. A gang of men will be placed on the Aloana Roa road at New Year to clear the track to the beach so that motorists will have no <lifliculty in reaching the kiosk. Now that the weather is settled, a good number will be camping on the northern side of the Rangitikei, and for bathing and fishing the Aloana Roa beach is unequalled. Mr W. H. Olson, head teacher, and members of the Bulls Schoo! committee are grateful to donors of books for the .school library. Recently Afrs F. Ralfe forwarded about thirty very fine books, and no doubt that are many others whose children have out-grown kiddies’ books; and the library committee could do with any number of suitable
