RANGITIKEI CRICKET

JUNCTION v. BROADWAY GEE ONE SHORT OF CENTURY' Yesterday on the Rangitikei County Cricket grounds, Junction were defeated by Broadway by 66 runs. Junction won the toss and sent Broadway in to bat. The first two wickets went cheaply, but 54 were put on before the third fell. Gee opened cautiously but was soon playing with delightful freedom. Low and Mcßeth stayed out many overs during which Gee did most of the scoring. He threw his wicket away one short of his century, with the score at 145. With two men short, Broadway were all out for 154. For Junction, McNamara bowled continuously and consistently at one end, change bowlers bein'- fewSaywell and Burke opened Junction’s batting, and played a good innings apiece, the former playing a nice batHe is a left hander and a new recruit for Junction- Burke (23) made a mi"htv drive, but mis-hit, playing the ball on. S. R- IDickMr Over was proceeding northwards along Broadwfty and was just passing Dr. Dick’s stationary car as the latter pulled out from the kerb. A collision resulted the impact being severe enough to loosen the front bumper of the Chrysler, which hit the rear left hand mud-guard of the Morris Minor.

DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING The monthly meeting of the committee of the Marton District High School was held on Tuesday evening, the chairman, Mr A. Strawbridge presiding. Mr T. Fletcher representing the grounds committee, reported on improvements suggested for the children s playgrounds. It. was considered unwise to proceed with anything just now, as it was too late in the year but that it be ploughed, levelled and sown in the autumn. It was recommended to put a dressing of screened pit gravel on the footpath from the Wellington. Road entrance preparatory to tar sealing. Mr Wilson, suggested that it be left till school takes up after the Christmas holidays so that the traffic would tramp it down hard. It was reported that the dise'ase discovered in the front Ake Ake hedge was the gall-fly. The whole of the new hedge from the school gates down to the river fence was found to be heavily infested and was dug out and burned. There is no known cure and the disease is highly infectious. The old hedge was infected in only a few places which was pruned and burned. A letter from the Public Works Department with reference to the sum of £25.0<M1 for unemployment relief was received. A letter was received from Dorothy Pebble thanking the committee for its congratulations on her recent, success. A letter from the Rangitikei Cricket Association upholding tße committee’s action in granting the use of the C.iuntv Cricket p -ounds to the Junction School for organised cricket practice on two days of the week was received. . It was suggested by Mr Eade to instal a fixed light over the front, school entrance for special occasions. The matter was left in the hands of Mr LWilliams with to actAfter much discussion it was decided to leave the matter of senior pupils using the tennis* courts during the summer vacation in the hands of the headmaster to make conditional arrangements necessitating the appointment of a responsible person in charge and the formation of a club and this was carTt was decided to invest the sum of of £25 in tho P.O. Savings Bank, the chairman and secretary to be trustees. Headmaster’s Report The headmaster reported that arrangements for a Christmas tree and a visit from Santa Claus on the day of the break-up ceremony was well in hand. Trees for the bank along the Tutaenui stream had arrived during the month and had been duly planted. The date suggested for the school picnic was February 18, at a place to be arranged. The committee confirm-

ed the suggested date.. BOWLING. Marton bowlers visited Hunterville yesterday, where two games were played for the Rangitikei Shield, Hunterville winning by four points.
