PATEA

COUNTY COUNCIL. The, I’atea County Council met on Tuesday, those present being Councillors W. G. Belton (chair), W. H. Watkins, C. Johnston, W. Beck, J. Peat, J. Lupton, R. G. Scown, R. G. Watt, and A. J. Gibbs. The County Clerk (Mr W. F. Sheild) and the County Engin ecr (Mr L. F. Ross) were also present.

Air McCartney, of Opaku, applied for some work to be done on the Maben Road to enable him to get his manure, etc. to his farm.

The chairman stated it might be worth while to apply for a. grant from the Unemployment Board and set unemployed to work on the road. Accommodation would have to be found for these men, six being the suggested number. The engineer said that a short while ago he wanted some extra men for a job, and on going to get some of the unemployed that were on his books he found they were all in jobs. The unemployment in Patea was not at all acute, most of those living in Patea without work having come from Wanganui.

The matter was left to Councillors Baek and Scown and the engineer, with power to act.

A settlement was made between two of the farmers for the use of a certain piece of land. Mr R. Teahy, Puao, applied for the grazing rights of the said land, which was situated on the banks of the Waitotara River qti the opposite side of the road to his property. Mr Bond had recently fenced off this portion, without gaining permission. Mr Leahy stated he was prepared to compensate Mr Bond for the fence. Th-» chairman stated that some rental should be paid for the use of this section of land, and also for a similar piece close by. It was finally decided to ask Messrs Leahy and Bond to make offers of the price of leases of such portions of land.

Tenders for dog tax collector were dealt with. Air J. Hurley, of Waitotara, being appointed for the next year.

After discussing the several tender? for dog collars, that of Air F. K. Gund-

erson, of Auckland, was accepted at 6d a collar and 2’d for relabelling last year’s collars.

It was decided to carry out repairs at the Council’s cottage. Dog taxes for the next year were fixed at the usual rate of 2s 6d for sheep and cattle dog, and 10s for every other.

Tenders for the draining of the Lake’s district in the Waverley Riding were discussed and finally left in the hands of the riding representatives and the engineer, with power to act. On application by Airs Ward, Moumahaki. it was decided to give the council’s cottage there two coats of paint. Several other matters were discussed and settled.

Accounts were read and passed for payment, after which the council rose.
