HOBBS AND SUTCLIFFE PLAYING TO ORDERS CAUSTIC COMMENT ON DISPLAYS DELHI, Dice. 3. There has been some caustic comment on the barndoor cricket as played by Hobbs and Sutcliffe. Following their stolid exhibitions in Calcutta, both adopted “Johnny won’t hit today” tactics at Bangalore. Hobbs batted for nearly an hour and a-half for 38 and then retired. Sutcliffe, after two and a quarter hours’ play had made 56. His wicket was still intact. In the first innings both were run out when Hobbs was 46 and Sutcliffe 2 It is felt that England’s first eric ket pair are not giving of their best, possibly at the Maharaj Kumar’s orders as the Vizianagram wants to win matches. In Calcutta, when asked why he scored only 5 in an hour, Hobbs replied that he was playing to orders just as he was accustomed to do for his country.
