ONCE MAIL FISTED
NOW CLOSE-FISTED. BERLIN, Nov. 15. Although the former Kaiser is still the wealthiest German, he sent only £1 to buy a wreath for his godchild, who was one of the coalminers killed in the Alsdorf disaster, when 231 were killed. He also sent a letter of sympathy to the Burgomaster, but it did not contain any enclosure for the victims’ relatives.
A Berlin newspaper declares:— “Whilst William wore the crown he had a civil list for which the people paid, and he liked to play the part of public benefactor. Since he has become a private person he docs not dip into hL; own pockets.”
