GEM’S TRAIL OF TRAGEDY. WASHINGTON Nov. 14. Once again the unlucky Hope dia mond appears in an unlucky role, in the family of Edward McLean, the millionaire publisher. Airs McLean, one of the nation’s outstanding hostesses, is petitioning the Court for £2OOO a month and counsel’s fees during her fight for separate maintenance.
Ten years ago she became the possessor. of the famous jewel, which is a large blue stone weighing 441 carats. It is supposed to have been cut from a stone purchased by Louis XIV of France, in 1668, which weighed 112 J carats, and 67J carats after cutting. It was stolen from the French Crown jewels in 1782 and the Hope diamond, which came into the market in 1830, is supposed to bo part of the missing stone. H. T. Hope bought it for £lB,OOO. It was sold in 190(5, and again in 1909. The last time it was sold it realised £32,000. All of its purchasers come to violent onds. .
