WANGANUI CENTRE

TO APPEAR AT TAIHAPE. VISITORS FROM U.S.A. The Wanganui-Taranaki Amateur Athletic Centre met last evening, Mr L. Cohen presiding. The New Plymouth Club applied for the holding of the West Coast Championships. The letter stated that there was now excellent lighting at Pukekura Park.

Several members spoke in favour of New Plymouth holding the championship meeting this year. On the motion of Mr F. C. Atkinson, seconded by Mr Cohen, it was decided to accede to the request. The meeting decided t offer to Tai hape March .18, a date on which the American athletes could appear at a meeting in the Wanganui-Taranaki area. Appreciation was expressed at the action of the Marton Club in withdrawing an application for the date, in view of the benefit it would be to Taihape. Messrs H. E. Edmondson, G. A. Benson and H. Dustin were appointed a subcommittee to report, as to what dates would be available for Centre meetings.

The secretary reported .hat a club at Opunakc had applied for affiliation. He. said the application had bee: forwarded to the New Zealand Council, and that it. had been reported that the club had been affiliated.

The Wanganui Club requested to be allowed to hold a night meeting on January 22. It was decided that discussion of the application should be deferred until the dates for Centre meetings had been fixed. The inclusion of Harlow Rothert, field events competitor, in the American team to tour New Zealand thi.. season was considered. It was decided that the New Zealand Council should be notified that the Centre was agreeable to his inclusion. Originally the Centre opposed the inclusion of Rothert, as the guarantee for each meeting would be raised by £lO, making it £4O. It was also felt, that as the meetings at which the visitors would be in action would be night meetings, there would not be sufficient interest in field events to warrant his inclusion. The secretary reported last evening that four other Centres had agreed to Rothert ’s inclusion.
