TOUR TO ENGLAND

NEW ZEALAND CRICKETERS. REVISED PROGRAMME. Plans for the visit of a New Zealand cricket team to England next year have reached a stage at which those making arrangements are able to state that the tour will eventuate, and that it will be carried out under conditions which appear to lie tetter than was the case with the first visit of a New Zealand cricket team to England, writes “Not Out,” in the Evening Post.

It is practically certain that the team will leave Wellington for England, via the Panama Canal, on March 28, arriving at its destination in tunc to spend several days at practice, before fulfilling its first match engagements. Matters in connection with the financial arrangements were considered last week in Wellington by Messrs D. Reese (president), W. li. Winsor. (hon. secretary), and D. E. Wankdyn (hon. treasurer), of the New Zealand Cricket Council, and a report upon what has been done will be made later. No douot a good deal of information regarding tnc tour will be supplied at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Cricket Council, which is to be held in Christchurch next Wednesday. It is stated by Mr Winsor that the New Zealand team’s itinerary has now been practically completed, the revised programme indicating that an excellent tour has teen mapped out. One question yet to be settled is as to whether a match with a Combined Services team wi : i be of two or three days’ duration. The idea of the New Zealand representative in England is that the fixture- should be limited to two days, in ordei that the New Zealand tdani might, have a little let-up at this stage of the lour.

Definite Status. One very satisfactory feature of the programme is that New Zealand has been given a Test. Further evidence of the Dominion being given a higher cricket status is contained in the report of the business transacted at the last Imperial Cricket Conference. New Zealand, with the West Indies and India. was granted the right for the present to have one vote at the conference, with permission to have two dele-

gates present. England, South Africa, and Australia each have twe votes.

N.Z. Council’s View. Reference to the New Zealand tour to England in idol is made in the annual report of the New Zealand Cricket Council, as follows:—“A very satisfactory programme has been arranged for our tour to England next season, including one Test match at Lord's, matches against almost all the firsiclass counties, and two matches against several of the first-class counties. Taking into account the good impression that the New Zealand team made in 1927, it is hoped that the next tout will be a financial succe. and the Alan agement Committee proposed to finance the tour by the formation of a company as on the previous occasion. The committee recognises that it will uot be so easy to finance the tour on account ol the present financial depression, but it has no doubt that with the assistance of the associations and the supporters of cricket in this country, the tour will proceed.

“The committee thinks that wc should make the effort to send another team to England while there are still available some members of the 1927 team, and the experience which will be gained by our players in England next season will be of great benefit to cricket generally in New Zealand during the next ten years at least. The confidence shown by members of the 1927 team against the fast and fasv medium bowling of the M.C.C. team last season could ze definitely attributed to lessons learned by those batsmen in England. It is not proposed to send another team to England for at least eight years as the programme of Dominion visits to England is now settled nine years in advance; next year —1931 —is the only year open to New Zealand for five or six years ahead.

“The committee proposes to instruct the New Zealand selectors that special attention must be paid to fielding, and that no player shall be selected whose fielding fails to reach a fair average standard. ”
