SOUTH TARANAKI

PATEA CYCLING. Though all other sports bodies had abandoned their arrangements for play last Saturday afternoon, the Carlyle Club went ahead with preparations for their club championship, which was held in the afternoon in torrents of rain. The race was a distance of 40 miles, from Stratford to Patea, and most of the way the riders had to cycle through teeming .ain. It says a lot for the enthusiasm of the club when even against such weather conditions the riders were satisfied to compete in this championship race for the Beer Cup, presented by Mr W. Beer, a keen and active member of the club. Fifteen riders faced the starter at the Straford Post Office, the first to go off being H. Rowe, T. Broughton, Goodwin and Kia, with 18 minutes’ start. Next came W. Olds and M. Dixon, six minutes behind, with IL Rangi on 'he 104 minute mark. Thow (). Close and Teipite on 9 minutes, 'D. Nelson on 63 minutes, and R. Clarkson on 43 minutes all started off briskly. W. Beer and S. Forsythe had minutes’ start of the scratch men, A. Clarkson and J. Julian. Julian was last year’s champion over the 40-mile race from Wanganui to Patea. The first mishap was Forsythe’s pedal, which off only two and flhalf miles from Stratford. H. Clarkson and Julian were going well approaching Eltham, pacing each other. Unluckily Clarkson overran Julian’s wheel and came off. Julian waited for Clarkson, wasting a few precious minutes. Beer was going very well, overtaking everybody, and it looked dangerous for the leaders. But unfortunately he turned the corner too fast and came off. Nevertheless all those who came off, mounted again and finished. When about three miles from Patea Broughton was in the lead, with Rangi, Nelson and R. Clarkson close behind. Turning the corner into the straight before the borough line, Broughton ran into a mob of cattle and was forced to to dismount. But he cleared a track and Rangi went straight through to win. Nelson followed next, with second fastest time (1 hour 52 minutes 28 seconds). R. Clarkson was third, with fastest time (1 hour 50 minutes 30 seconds). Rangi came in nearly two minutes ahead of the next man. T. Broughton and. O. Close came in soon after with about two minutes between them. The cup and trophies will be presented next Saturday night, for which arrangements are being made.
