MARRIED WOMEN TEACHERS
A PRINCIPLE OPPOSED. [Per Press Association.] OAMARU, Nov. 14. The principle of the appointment of married women teachers was strongly opposed at a well-attended meeting of householders at the Totara School last evening. The position has arisen as the result of the proposal to appoint a young married woman whose husband is in a good position and who has been married for only nine months. Out of a number of applicants her’ position was highest on the grading list. The following resolution was carried unanimously: “This meeting of householders views with utter dismay the appointment of a married woman teacher as assistant at Totara on the grounds: (1) From the economic standpoint, her husband being able to provide for her; (2) the appointment would cause the unemployment of a young teacher j (3) in view- of the hostility the interests of the children would not be furthered, as a large nunjber would be withdrawn from the school, which would suffer in grade, necessitating the transfer of the headmaster.
