WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED
THE GOVERNMENT’S ACTION [Per Press Association.] INVERCARGILL, Nov. 14. News that 40 of the men employed on the To Anau relief works arc to be discharged on November 18, and replaced by another 40, came as a surprise to those dealing with the unemployment question here.
Recently advice was received from the Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle that 40 men would be placed on the To Anau works, and this was interpreted as meaning that an additional 40 men would thus be employed. On receipt of the Department’s decision to engage a fresh batch of 40, the Mayor telegraphed to the Minister of Public Works stating that he understood that the men at To Anau were incensed at the proposal, and adding that the situation here demanded that additional provision be made urgently for unemployment works. Messages wecr also sent to Mr de la Perrelle and Mr H. E. Holland.
