THE WETS’ AND “DRYS”

AMERICA’S BIG PROBLEM

election predictions [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright] Received Sept. 14, 7.42 p.m. NE-.V YORK, Sept. 12. The Times Washington correspondent says that politicians were brought to realise, by events this week, that the prohibition Question cannot bo disregarded as the main issue of the Presidential Campaign of 1932. predictions are being made that the Democrats not only have a “wet” candidate, but will make a “wet” platform declaration which they did not do when they had a “wet” candidate in 1928. Senator Wheeler, who has been long “dry,” to-day issued a statement favouring the State control in the liquor question, and -jointed attention to Governor Franklin Roosevelt, New York, a close friend of Smith, and who last week issued a similar statement as the probable Democratic candidate for 1932. Republican officials, who had come to believe that the prohibition question would not figure largely at this November’s regular biennial Congressional elections, now realise that the result of last week primaries, in which representatives Crampton, Hudson and -diliier, the well known “dries,” lost nominations to “wets,” that the 'wet-dry” issue will be more prominent than ever. Superintendent Mcßridge, of the Anti-Saloon League, in a statement today, admitted that “drys” would lose 29 seats in the House of Representatives in November, but claimed there Will be the remaining 300 known “drys.”
