In this comedy-drama of society life, which deals with wealthy New Yorkers, their foibles and didoes, Miss Chatterton is the wife of a wealthy banker, who thinks more of his Wall Street than he does of his home sweet home. RANGITIKEI DAIRY GOY. LTD. ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of shareholders of the Rangitikei Dairy Coy. Ltd. was held in Bulls on Saturday. There was an attendance of seventy members, and Mr W. Purcell acting chairman of directors, presided. Mr Purcell referred to Mr K. W. Dalrymple’s absence, and said that no doubt all hoped to see the chairman back again soon after his holiday in America.
Speaking to the report, Mr Purcell said that a notable feature was the increased production. For the past four years the output had shown successive reco’d increases, and last season the output had increased by 99 tons. Though somewhat irregular the season was marked by the high grading reports received by the company, which had topped the grading list for New Zealand. This was the second successive season that Rangitikei had won the Control Board’s Cup, and the fourth year that it had topped the New Zealand grading list. There had been very keen competition for grading honours in the Dominion, which was a desirable thing. Credit is due to suppliers for sending in good raw material, which enabled the staff to produce such a fine finis! 3d article. There had been a drop in the price of butter, but other commodities had also dropped in value. None of the company’s butter had been held in store. He considered that increased production may have had a tendency to cause a fall in values, and it had been brought home to him very solidly that we must purchase from those who purchase from us (hear, hear).
In reference to the maintenance charges appearing intho balance-sheet, he explained that the’’increase in the company’s output necessitated procuring more machinery. In this respect their chairman, Mr Dalrymple, travelled about the country a good deal, finding out the most efficient plants in use, and ho had done a splendid service to tho company. In reply to a question as to whether the directors were buying British goods for the store trading, Mr Purcell, said that as far as possible they were doing so. He went on to refer to tht, motor lorries, and said th-.t the next lorries would be English (applause.) He moved the adoption of the report; which was seconded by Mr F. C. Brookie, and carried unanimously.
Capital increase.—Mr J. F. Campion strongly opposed the proposed increase in the capital of the company, which he said was likely to become overcapitalised. Ho moved, and Mr G. Young seconded, that the directors be recommended to consider. a scheme whereby ono share would be issued for every 3001 b. of butter-fat. Ho considered that the capital, when paid up, would increase the company’s liability. He said also that something should be done about the shares held by persons who had left the district. They could be termed “Dry shareholders.”—The motion was carried.
A desultory debate followed on the • subject of “Dry shareholders,” Mr j J. E. Walker expressing the opinion [ that they should be got rid of. Mr D. Anderson, speaking on behalf of the directors, said that they fully appreciated tho position, and in some cases the company had purchased the shares held by the “dry’’ men . He said that when calls were fax in arrear the shares should bo forfeited. The secretary pointed out that such action had not yet been taken. The discussion then lapsed. General business.—The report of the auditor was read and received, and on the motion of Mr J. E. Walker, the secretary (Mr R. Thompson) was accorded a congratulatory vote in appreciation of his sterling work. Mr A. Haworth, of Wanganui, was re-elected auditor. The chairman thanked shareholders for their expressions of confidence in Mr K. W. Dalrymple and himself, and Mr T. Simpson moved a vote of congratulation to the directors on being returned unopposed. > The directors and chairmen (of directorate and store committee respectively) were voted allowances based on those made the previous year, and the factory employees were each granted a bonus of three guineas.
Mr P. Madden, representing a journal associated with the pig industry, attended the meeting and explained the various means by which the journal assisted breeders to co-operate for their mutual advantage, and urged shareholders to pledge the company to become a subscriber.—lt was eventually decided that 100 copies of the journal would be ordered through the company, and if extra copies were requiied, they would be obtained. Those wishing to take the journal will have to make application’ to the company. In connection with the pig industry, Mr J. F. CampioT pointed out that the Governor-General had said that New Zealand was not breeding the right class of pigs, and a Canadian Tamworth exhibited at a recent show was
considered the best baconer. Mr Anderson stated th.-.t a conference had been held in Palmerston North recently, and as the outcome, he hoped there would be evolved a practicable scheme for getting the best out of tho industry. He considered that the scheme would be a more satisfactory one than that which was in operation two seasons ago. Mr Purcell supported the previous speaker, and said that with the propects of low prices for butter, the best should be made out of the farmers’ side-lines. The meeting closed, with a very hearty vote of thanks to tho chairman fc* the able manner in which he had discharged his duties.
