OHINGAITI QUEEN CARNIVAL The position of the indicator flags on the Town Hall at present is, Ist Sports, 2nd Dairy, 3rd Wool. Clashing with fixtures in the surrounding districts was the cause of the poor attendance at the Sports Queen social and dance held in the Waituna Hall on Friday evening last. Those who attended enjoyed the entertainment offered and dancing was continued till about 1 a.m. Items were given by Miss Joyce Havward and some of her pupils in dancing, and Miss B. Dewe, all of Feilding, and by Mr Charles. Music was supplied by Mrs Fletcher, Feilding, and Messrs Philps and Linton. Forthcoming Fixtures. The Sports Committee have arranged a dance to be held in the hall at Rewa, this evening, Monday. A good time is promised all. A concert in aid of the funds of the Wool Queen will be held in the Town Hall, Ohingaiti, on Tuesday, 19th. Manv well known artists from outside districts will provide a varied and popular programme.
OHAKUNE GENERAL The first stock sale in the Ohakune .saleyards will held next Wednesday afternoon. On Wednesday talkies were opened in the Patriotic Hall. Thia means that there are now two talkies in the borough. During the interval on Wednesday the Mayor, Mr Goldfinch, congratulated the company upon its successful showing. SCHOOL GAMES The Ohakune primary school boys journeyed to Raetihi on Friday and beat the local boys at football by 22 points to nil. The Ohakune school girls played basketball with Raetihi, and they lost by 6 to 8. MATERNITY HOSPITAL At a well-attended public meeting held in the Plunket Rooms it was decided to approach the Wanganui Hospital Board and ask them to establish a maternity hospital at Ohakune. A committee comprising Messrs G. Goldfinch, Hanger, A. H. Gray, F. Pearce, N. Christie, Crighton, Bowman and Smith, Mesdames J. Cowan, L. Fetzer, J. Thomas and Smith and Nurse Smith and D. Jordan, were appointed to further the movement, an 1 to arrange a deputation to the Wanganui Hospital Board. The Mayor, Mr G. Goldfinch, convened the meeting, and presided. He said that before the Raetihi Hospital was established endeavours were made to get one at Ohakune, but without success. Mr Langstone, M.P. had been informed by the Board that if the people of Ohakune would do their part the Board would come to their assistance.
Mr Langstone, M.P. spoke, pointing out the importance of safeguarding health, and the advantages of having a maternity hospital at Ohakune. Dr. Jordan said pxpectant moothers found the Raetihi institution rather far away, and it was inconvenient for a local doctor to be called outside his own immediate district.
Nurse Smith pointed out that babies suffering from malnutrition could be treated much more economicallv in a local institution than being taken to Wanganui Hospital. Mr J. Morton, representative of the district on the Hospital Board, said there was question of finance to be considered. He thought a deputation from Ohakune would receive a sympathetic hearing from the Hospital Board. Mr F. Cody, pointed out that the number of births in Ohakune last year would keep the present maternity ward in the Raetihi Public Hospital full all the year. The chairman thanked Mr Langstone, M.P., Mr J. Morton, and Dr. Jordan for their attendance, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the Mayor. BOROUGH COUNCIL The monthly meet : ng of the Ohakune Borough Council was held on Thursday night, when there were prestnt: The .Mayor (Mr G. Goldfinch), Crs. Christie, Cody, Nation, Mahony, Relf and Wood. An apology was received from Cr. Webb. Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote with regard to a section forfeited; inquiries were being made by the department.
Auditor-General acknowledged receipt of letter about an endorsement on the balance sheet, and stated that no further action would be taken.
Medical Officer of Health supplied information with regard to apportionment of cost of providing inspection. — Crs. Mahony and Cody were appointed to meet the Health Inspector and discuss the matter with him on the occasion of his next visit.
Mr J. Ivess wrote asking the cost of small shingle. Mr F. Langstone, M.P. stated efforts to retain the daylight limited had proved fruitless.
Secretary Plunket Society wrote soliciting the support of the Council for the proposed maternity hospita 1 at Ohakune. It was resolved that the Council give the proposal its full support. Patriotic Hall Company wrote stating that it had resumed control of the hall and asked if all the requirements of the Council had been complied with.— The letter was referred to the Borough solicitors.
The same company applied for permission to on Sundays. It was resolved that permission he granted on the same conditions as formerly granted to Mr H. Thomson.
Miss York wrote applying for increase of 10s a week.—Granted.
Permits were for building and a wash house, cowshed and verandah. Mr F. Langstone, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister in charge of scenic preservation regretting that no grant would be available this year.— It was eed to forward the letter to the Lakes Scenic Board.
On the recommendation of the works committee it was resolved that general maintenance be continued on the footpaths and roads, especially on the foot•aths
The electric light committee recommended that a new switch time-piece be procured for the Clyde Street north i section of community lighting, and this was agreed to. Accounts amounting to £lO5 9s 8d verc passed for payment. The plan of subdivision of lot 2, secion 10, block 9, Ohakune, was approved •nd seal of Council affixed to plan. The receipts for the month totalled ;192 4s, and the expenditure £593 7s 2d. Rates. A special meeting was held at the close of the ordinary mooting, when the rates were struck for the year. A general rate of 6d in the £l, and several special rates, ma! ing an amalgamated rate of Is 5d in the £1 on the unimproved value, were agreed to in addition to a sanitation fee of £2 per pan. A rebate of 5 per cent will 1 allowed for prompt payment.
