TAIHAPE BOROUGH AFFAIRS,

The monthly meeting of the Taihape Borough Council was held on Friday evening when the Deputy Mayor (Cr E. Loader) occupied the chair. Also present were Crs de Lautour, F. White, Read, McDonald, Christensen and G. Kelly. The town clerk (Mr E. J. Price), the borough engineer (Mr H. A. Truman), and the electrical engineer (Mr H. G. Knight), were also in attendance.

Letters were received from the family of the late Sir Joseph Ward, and the Primo Minister acknowledging receipt of the Council’s resolution of sympathy with the death of Sir Joseph. Mr H. Williams local manager for Messrs Fuller-Hayward wrote stating that owing to the scarcity of silent films it was becoming increasingly difficult to show pictures at the Town Hal] once a week, as required under the conditions of the lease. He inquired if. in view of the circumstances, dances only would suit, instead of a combination of pictures and dancing.—The letter was referred to the Finance Committee.

A letter was received from the Mayor (Mr J. P. Aldridge) stating he had been seriously ill and was unable to attend to his duties. On the motion of Cr. Christensen, the Mayor was granted three months leaves of absence.

The minutes of a special meeting of the Council on August 1, when it was decided that the offer of the Taihape Tennis Club of £7O in full settlement for the work done and the materials supplied to No. 1 tennis court be accepted, were confirmed. The report of the Works Committee read as follows: The committee recommended:— “That the engineer’s report dated August 7, 1930, be referred to the Council for consideration and approval. “That after further consideration, the application of Mrs M. Smith for a sewer connection to her property in Moa Street be granted, and the engineer be instructed to have the main sewer in Main Street extended to enable the connection to bo made. “That the wages of Mr E. Hobman be increased to £5 per week. “That the following applications for building permits be granted, subject to tho usual conditions. “Wanganui - Rangitikei Electric Power Board, garage, Goldfinch Street, J. Quirk, reinstatement of office, Hautapu Street, A. Floyd, dwelling Puri Puri Street. Shell Co. of N.Z. Ltd., loading platform, Mataroa Road. The committee reported. Having made application for permission to fence the land at the back of the properties occupied by Messrs, R. Wilson and others and having granted Mr T. O’Dea permission to exchange abattoir paddock No. 4 for No. 1 and having offered Mr O’Dea No. 4 paddock at the usual rental. That the following stock was killed at the abattoirs during the month of July 1930: 25 cows, 67 bullocks, 346 sheep, 4 lambs, and 40 pigs. The report was adopted.

The report of a special meeting of the Electric Light Committee read as follows:

“Having examined the qualifications of four members of the Electric Light Department's staff, and the return of the overtime paid. The committee recommend that in order to obviate any undue amount of overtime being paid to any one man, the Electrical Engineer be instructed to endeavour, .before the next dry season, to arrange his staff in such a way as to enable him to have a third man available as a relief operator in the power house, and that it be a suggestion to him that if the awards permit him to do so he employ one of his staff in the dual position of linesman-power house operator."—The report was adopted. The monthly report, of the Electric Light Committee read as follows: ‘ ‘ The committee recommend—- " That the electrical engineer’s report dated August 11, 1930, be referred to the Council for consideration and approval. 4 ‘That the electrical engineer’s special report on fire alarm system and fire board energy account be received. "That the electrical engineer be in-

structed not to carry out any repairs or make any alterations to the fire alarm system without instructions from the Fire Board. “That the letter from Mr W. H. Mac Loan thanking the Council, on behalf of the petitioners for a street light in Ruru Road, for granting their request be received. “That the costing clerk’s report dated August 11, 1930, be received and filed for future reference. “That applications, closing on Friday. August 22, 1930, be called for an apprentice for the Electrical Department.

“That the following application for energy be granted:—J. H. Johnson — eight lighting aqd one heating points.” —The report was adopted. The following is a copy of the report of the Finance Committee: —

“The committee recommends that the treasurer’s report dated August 12, 1930, be referred to the Council for consideration and approval “That the letter from the medical officer of health re Council’s contribution to the salary and expenses of the Inspector of Health be received, and the Finance Committee meet the Medical officer in reference to the matter during his next visit to Taihape. “That having examined accounts and vouchers amounting to £lOl6 18s Bd, same be passed for payment. “The committee report having considered the question of the allocation of the seating accommodation according to charges for admission in the Town Hall when same is engaged by theatrical companies etc., and being of opinion that the insertion of a clause in the Town Hall lotting conditions dealing with this matter is not advisable.” — The report was adopted. The report of the Domains and Cemetery Committee read as follows:

“The committee recommend that the caretaker’s report dated August 7, be referred to the Council for consideration and approval. The quotations he obtained for the painting and repairing of the hand rotunda and the replacing of the cast iron work with wood. That the children’s playground be established in the Papakai Road Reserve. That the procuring of seeds for tho nursery and flower seeds for the triangle be left in the hands of the chairman. That trees' for street planting be supplied free of cost to ratepayers desiring same providing they are prepared to plant and care for same under the directions of tho Council.”—The report was adopted.
