OBITUARY

MR CHARLES J. SWANN. The death took place during the week, of Mr Charles John Swann, at his residence in May Street. The late Mr Swann was 69 years of age.. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the late Mr Swann came to New Zealand with his parents, while ho was still young. He served his apprenticeship with Cousins and Black, Dunedin. For 16 years he was associated with the Union Steamship Company, rising to the position of chief marine engineer. Later he went to the West Coast, being consulting engineer to F. W. Payne, where he was prominent in gold dredging activities. From there he came to Wanganui to supervise the construction of the old bucket dredge. For many years Mr Swann was master of the dredge. He was then chosen as representative of the Wanganui Harbour Board to supervise the construction of the "Kaione" in Great Britain. His duties, which occupied two and a half years during the War, were carried out to the complete satisfaction of all concerned. Accompanied by Mrs Swann he returned to Wanganui and took charge of the “Kaione. ’’ The late Mr Swann designed anl supervised the installation of the machinery at the patent slip at Putiki which has received a large amount of favourable comment. Resigning his position with the Harbour Board, he joined the Holm Shipping Company, re maining in their employ for three years. For some time the late M r Swann held the position of surveyor for Lloyd’s at Wanganui. The many tokens of esteem of which Mr Swann was the recipient during his lifetime speak for the popularity and high regard in which ne was he’d. His death was sudden and unexpected. Mr Swann is survived by his widow and two daughters, Muriel and Lilian (Mrs Luceua), and a sister Mr;> S. Robertson, of Dunedin. The funeral leaves his late reslJ< nee at 2 pfm. to-day.
