GETTING NOTORIOUS
A FOURTH OFFENCE. DRUNK IN CHARGE OF CART. “This man is getting notorious for this class of offence,” said Senior-Ser-geant McLean at the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday, when John Hayes was charged, before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M., with being found drunk while in charge of a horse and cart in Victoria Avenue on Friday. The defendant pleaded guilty. The Senior-Sergeant said that it was the fourth time that the defendant had appeared on the same charge. He was a bottle gatherer. Hayes said that if he were given another chance he would leave town and go out into the bush. “The difficulty is to know what to do with you,” said tho Magistrate. “You are a menace on the streets.”
“I only want one or two drinks and I am drunk,” volunteered the defendant. “I will prohibit myself and leave the town.”
The Magistrate remarked that the powers should be the same as under the motor regulations to prevent such a person as the defendant from driving, and imposed a fine of £lO, in default one month’s imprisonment. Seven days were allowed for payment, the defendant stating that in that time he would sell the horse and cart.
