RANGITIKEI

MARTON TUTAENUI SCHOOL CONCERT The annual concert and prize distri. bution in connection with the Upper Tutaenui School will bo held in the Tutaenui Social Hall on Friday evening, December 13. A spclcndid concert programme has been arranged and patrons can rely on a first class evening’s entertainment. THE PICTURES Syd. Chaplin is scoring the biggest success of his career in ‘ ‘Tho Fortune Hunter,” tho Master Picture special to be screened at Marton Town Hall this afternoon. “The Fortune Hunter’' is tho screen version of the brilliant stage play. Graham Baker’s picturisation has kept all the uproarious mirth and humanity of the original and the added advantage of staging and photo, graphy together with the masterly direction of Charles F. Reisner, who directed all the rest of Syd’s successes make of the piece the tremendous hit it is. It recounts the story of a young go-getter who swoops down on a Vermount village witr tho intention of marrying the richest girl in town. Beautiful Helene Costello plays the lead. The cast is a superb one. CRICKET NOTES BY “SHORT LEG ” Mr J. H. C. Broad is to be congratulated on having selected a good allround side to meet Wanganui in the elimination Hawke Cup match on FrL day and Saturday of next week. Rangitikei have a veteran in A. Staples but the average age of the team is about twenty-eight and this speaks well for the selector’s judgment, as the Rangitikei fielding has always been weak with the inclusion of so nil.<y veterans in their ranks in past setiThcre are eight new caps this year, A. P. Smith, A. K. Hodder, W. Hayward, A. E, Glennie, P. Burke, D'. G. Barton, D. B. Sladden, and M. Lyon. The Rangitikei Team A, P. Smith (captain): Should make an ideal captain, as he is one of the keenest cricketers in Rangitikei, and one who thoroughly understands the game. He first came into the limelight in Rangitikei cricket with his brilliant bowling against H. M. McGirr’s XI, at Easter time. Bowls right-hand medium with good length and turns them both ways. Is a fair bat and a good slip field.

A K. Hodder: A newcomer to Rangitikei cricket, but no means a newcomer to rep. cricket. Has represented Manawatu for several seasons and has scored many centuries for them. It a brilliant batsman and an excellent field. It also a good medium pace righthand bowler. Played for Manawatu against MacLaren’s 1923 team.

D. A. Cameron: Has represented Rangitikei on many occasions, ana scored in his first Hawke Cup match 120 against Wairarapa. He has since played for the Country team v. Town on three occasions and scored 54 not out in the recent Town verses Country match at Wellington. He is one of the best bats in the country, and a fine field in any position. W, Hayward: An excellent wicketkeeper, who takes the ball particularly well on the leg-side and a fast scoring bat. For Hunterville he has made 103 not out v. Porewa at Hunterville in 1928-29 and 100 nOt out v. Broadway at Hunterville about a month ago. P. Burke: Like Hodder, has represented Manawatu for several seasons and has done well in Hawke Cup games, his highest score being that of 106 retired, against Wairarapa. He

is a good forcing batsman and a good field.

D. G. Barton: A stylish bat and a slow bowler, who has done well in club games this year scoring 209 runs with an average of 52.25 and capturing 17 wickets for just under 10 runs apiece. He represented Wanganui in Hawke Cup cricket last season and is a good field.

D B. Sladden: Bowls left-hand, medium pace and swings from leg. Can hit well when in the mood. Is a good field at cover or in tho deep. Averages 30.33 in club games so far this season. A. Staples: A painstaking and fair batsman and useful field. Bowls righthand slow, with good length. Played a good innings of 46 against Taihape a fortnight ago and also captured five for 36 off 13 overs. Three seasons’ ago he captured five for 28 against Manawatu in a Hawke Cup game. M. Lyon: Is a good batsman with a fair variety of strokes. Bowls righthand medium pace and swings from off. Is an excellent field at slip or in the deep.

G. B. Crystall. A tall left-handed batsman and right-hand bowler of medium pace. Has scored consistently of late, and when set becomes very aggressive and scores at a fast rate, is a fair field. A. E. Glennie: Not much of a batsman or a great field, but is a medium fast bowler with a good action. Captur_ ed four for 29 for Taihape against Rangitikei a fortnight ago. R. Marsh (twelfth man): He scored well in club cricket, but is not a first class batsman, but is a fair wicketkeeper. Some readers may wonder at the non-inclusion of J. Stewart, who has been doing so well this season, but Stewart, although a good club bat, is not up to rep. standard. Broadway v. Junction Broadway and Junction met on Wednesday, the former team winning on the first innings by 127 runs. G. IDcnbow (54 not out) and J. Sutcliffe (41) both scored at a good pace, and before the last wicket fell the Broadway total had reached 189. Junction could only muster 61, tho chief scorers being Burke (15) and McNamara (11). Duncan captured five for 30 and Mcßeth four for 24. Marton Junction v. Marton The Junction team will be selected from the following players in their match against Marton this afternoon: Ledingham, XcNamara, Burke, Corlett, Roberts. Peterson, Wasson, Lawson, Bick Fyfe, McLennan, Whitcombe, Berry. Old Boys meet Hunterville this afternoon. The teams are:— Old Boys. —Ball, Barton, Taaffe, Wilson, Lyon (2), Lambert, Wysocki, Campbell, Marr, Price. (Bus leaves stand at 12.15 P-ur. sharp). . Hunterville. —J. Stewart, W. A. Bowick, 8. Still, A. G. H. Mowbray, G. Shan lev, L J. Thompson, A. Milton, C. Bowick, K." Baker J. Hallwood and A. W. Porter. Emergencies: C. Southey' and W. Cook. MARTON ATHLETIC CLUB The chief business at a meeting of the executive of hire Marton Athletic Club on Thursday evening was the making of arrangements for the open sports meeting to bo hold on January 1. A programme committee, consisting of Messrs 8 J. Gibbons, A. Smart, C. Henderson and S. B. Abel was sot up and they will submit a programme to a meeting of the general committee to be held on Mondav evening. Mr F. C. Tho latter realised over £3- Votes of thanks were accorded all who assisted in making the fixture so successful. It. was decided to invest £35 on fixed deposit in the Bank of Australasia. BULLS THE PICTURES . / One of the screen’s brightest stars and consequently one of its finest actresses is Anna Q. Nilsson, who costars with Francis X Bqshman in Universal's “The Thirteenth Juror,’’ which will open at tho Bulls Town Hall this evening. An interesting story is told in Hollywood of how truly groat she is. About eight years ago, she reached the first rung on the ladder of success and shortly afterward achieved stardom, which she has retained longer than probably any other star. But eight years ago a girl named Zasit Pitts, a little extra met the great Nilsson and would have starved had uot Miss Nilsson taken an unusual interest in the girl. The two became great chums. A true friendship grew between the star and the extra.

“I owe all my success to Anna,” said Miss Pitts. “Were it not for her I would never have secured my start. Her generosity, kindness and valuable advice did everything for me.’’ TENNIS TEAMS Showery weather has interfered with inter-club matches recently, and on Wednesday afternoon Bulls players visited Feilding, but wore unable to play.
