KEMPTHORNE PROSSER’S WORKS

MEETING A CHANGED OUTLOOKThis is an era of intense cultivation of pastures. Increased production n the watchword of the fanning ew> munity and the aim is to make One acre produce what it took two to return before. What does that mean? The answer is easy—it means that topdressing, a practice which, in the past might have been indulged in by just a few, has become a vital necessity to all pasture land. Grasses will not survive for ever in the face of heavy stocking and the increasing demand for more butter-fat, more fat lamb, more beef, more mutton. Wanganui is particularly favoured in regard to meeting the changed outlook. Kempthorne Prosser’s New Zealand Drug Company’s fertiliser works at Aramoho have been equipped with service to the farming community and, through that channel, service to New Zealand, a basic principle to guide their endeavours. Creation of better pastures and the renewing of faith in areas which were believed to be poor cannot help but add to Wanganui’s prosperity.

Apart from the ultimate major gain in the direction named, esablishment of Kempthorne Prosser's works has had a direct beneficial tendency towards Wanganui. Employment of a large number of hands and a fillip to local industry, and the bringing of increased wharfage to the Wanganui Harbour Board, are matters which need no stressing to those who have eyes to see. The firm is helping forward the day when Wanganui will boast a deep sea port. Figures given by Mr A. G. Bignell. ex-chairman of the Wanganui Harbour Board, show that 100.000 tons of overseas cargo has been landed at Castlecliff wharf. Of that 80,000 tons were phosphates and sulphur. Kempthorne Prosser’s works have been mainly responsible for that. The fertiliser works make for cheap and efficient distribution, and the farmer, bent on improving his land, cannot do bet; ter than buy “Westfield Superphosphate” 44/46 per cent., made in Wanganui by Kempthorne Prosser’s New Zealand Drug Company.
