OBITUARY

MR RAYMOND WILLIAM HODGES. The death of Mr Raymond William Hodges, who was very well known in Wanganui, occurred at the Auckland Hospital on Sunday morning. He was aged 24 years. The deceased, who is the secund son of Mr and Mrs W. J. Hodges, now resident in Taumarunui and late of Carlton Avenue, Wanganui, received his early education at the Gonville Public School and displayed considerable brilliance. In. 1918 he had the honour of being dux. He was particularly popular with the pupils and staff, and, in the opinion of Mr C. H. Bo water, who was headmaster of the institution for many years, was a lad of outstanding character. From the Gonville School the deceased went to the Wanganui Technical College ’to continue his studies, taking the commercial course. Here he also displayed his ability and wa s a member of the senior commercial form in his second year. In 1921 he was a member of the first eleven and the records show that he obtained the creditable average of 8.5 for bowling. Early in 1922 Mr Hodges left Wanganui for Wellington to take up a position with the Land and Income Tax Department. From there he went to Auckland, where he had accepted an offer by the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. 111-health intervened, and it became necessary for him to become an inmate of the Waipukarau sanitarium. Here an improvement was effected, and after a period of three months he was again able to commence work. For a short time he was employed by Messrs Bond and Bond, warehousemen, of Auckland. His old trouble again arose and he went to live on a farm at Maungatapere, near Whangarei. The desired improvement did not result, and his condition became so bad that it was necessary for him to bo admitted to the Auckland Hospital, where he was a patient for three months before death occurred.
