EASTERN FAIR

OPENING CEREMONY TO-NIGHT AT DRILL HALL Everything is now in readiness at the Drill Hall for the official opening this evening of the Grand Eastern Fair and Queen Carnival. The hall now presents a carnival aspect, the result of much voluntary labour by the Fair Committee, and a band of willing workers. The appearance of the hall will be further enhanced to-night by brilliant electric illuminations for which special arrangements have been made. In conjunction with the Fair is a Queen Competition and the voting for the respective candidates grows apace each day. The stalls and queens are as follows: Wanganui x.;. ;t: Miss Monica goryGonville: Aliss Muriel Craig. Jumble: Alias Margaret Carroll. Children of Miss Rita AlcVicar. Convent: Aliss Patrica Aloore. Sports: Aliss Rosie Vodanovich. Aramoho: Aliss Joyce O’Reilly. The voting barometer is in Therkleson’s window, and the position s of the queens will be changed each day. The quality of entertainment to be presented is of an 'exceptionally high standard, as Miss Beatrie Aydon, of Nelson, has been in Wanganui for the past few weeks arranging an attractive and colourful extravangza. Aliss Aydon is well known throughout the Dominion in amateur dramatic and musical circles, and is the possessor of a mezzosoprano voice of quality, and has many successes to her credit. Miss Aydon has associated with her leading local talent.

For to-night Aliss Aydon has arranged a specially selected programme of attractive numbers with a strong appeal. Special scenery and costumes have been designed for vhe production, which should attract considerable patronage. There will be alternative changes of programme during the season of the Fair. A specially augmented orchestra under the direction of Air F. Stokes has been engaged for the season. Ranged round the hall, are numerous stalls, piled high with works of art and goods of every description. The Fair is for a perior of eight days and as the charge for admission is purely nominal, namely fid and 3d liberal patronage should be accorded the function. To-morrow (Saturday) afternoon Aliss Aydon and her associates will stage a special matinee, for which evening prices will prevail. Alare or gelding, over 12.2 hands: Miss D. Young 1, K. Peebles 2.
