MANAWATU SHOW
THE FARMERS PAGEANT ENTRIES NOT NUMEROUS BATTLE QUALITY OUTSTANDING Since the days of the buggy the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association’s shows have been two events in the farmers’ year, and now that the motor car has taken the place of the horse-drawn vehicle the interest is not only as keen but, through the facility of quick transit, more widely manifested. Yesterday, when the second day of the Spring Show was marked by the judging of the sheep, cattle and some of the horse sections, there was a particularly large number of the farming community present. There was also a very good attendance of the general public, and. fortunately, although the sky was overcast, the weather was fine throughout the day. ( * * Chronicle” Special .Reporter, Knee in the grounds the significance of the phrase * * all the fun of the fair” was made apparent. In one corner there were various side-shows, luring one to try one's luck or to be entertained by some prodigy, while the music of the’ merry-go-round added a note of gaiety. In another section, trade display, with or without reference to the farmer nd his needs, added to the interest of the show. Other attractions were the ring competitions, the Kennel Club’s exhibition, and the manv fine displays in the art and indust rial division. To the farmer. of course, sheep, cattle and pigs were matters of paramount importance. Palmerston North is in the centre of an extensive and prosperous district and the show can. therefore be relied upon to attract stock of the finest quality. As far as the cattle section was concerned this was the case to a marked degree. There was no “tailing” oh n the entries, but where these gained in quality they lost in quantity, and a number of judges expressed disappointment that the competition was not keener than it was. In the course of an interview with a “Chronicle” reporter, Mr H. Jolly, judge of the Friesians, voiced his ‘regret that many of the classes attracted few competitors, but added that there was no doubt about the quality exhibited. Mr W. J. Eames Livingstone Lady Wakalona was the winner of the Alfa Laval Cup for the best dairy cow of any breed and this animal, said Mr dolly, was one of the finest he had seen. The yearling heifer and the yearling bull classes were good, but O. A. Cadwallader’s group, v<jich carried off the Wilber Remembrance Cup had nothing up against it, whereas, four years ago, there were five teams entered.
Commenting upon the Ayrshire entries, the judge, Mr J. I. G. Slack, ilso said that he was pleased with the quality, but disappointed with the numbers. The cattle were a credit to the exhibitors ami. in his opinion, would score anywhere. One of the females with which he was much impressed was the Massey Agricultural College’s heifer Waipapa Ada 7th, which was one of the finest two-year-olds he had seen. The aged cow classes
were very good. Disappointing entries were also shown in the sheep sections. The Bomney Marsh section attracted considerable competition and the Southdown sections were also good. Among the latter the champion ram and champion ewe were declared by Mr A. J. Cooper, judge of the Southdowns in rhe wool and in natural condition, to be outstanding in their classes and abb- io win a championship in any show. The shorn hoggets, he said, were very poor. He did not judge at last vear’s show, but he saw the class, and he was of the opinion that this year rhe entries were not so good in regard to number and quality. In the class for shorn ram hoggets he passed over two sheep as he considered that, undoubtedly, they had been under cover the previous night, being quite dry, while the other competing sheep were >oaking wet.
In regard to the pig section, the judge. Mr W. B. Grant, said that he was very disappointed in the Berkshire classes, which he thought were not up to the usual standard, with the exception of one or two entries. There were some very good Tamworths, which were, on the whole, rather better than the Berkshires. There were also some very nice pigs amongst the Large Whites. The female classes were very good, and an improvement on previous year. In the Large Blacks the champion and reserve champion sows were of outstanding merit. A new breed to the district was the Duroc Jersey, and each of these pigs was a fine specimen, particularly the boar. For size and weight, they were active and uniform in body, Referring to the fact that the judging commenced on Wednesday after noon, Mr Grant thought that this was a mistake, and expressed the opinion that the time should be 10 o’clock in the morning.
