REMITS DRAUGHTED
THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE OPINIONS FROM WANGANUI At a special meeting of the executive of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce held on Tuesday afternoon, the president, Mr W. J. Gilberd, presided over an attendance of the following: Messrs S. G. Whittali, W. Brown, A. S. Burgess, A. M. Gordon, J. H. Williams, A. E. Rankin and S. E. Goodey. The president explained that the meeting was called for the purpose of considering remits go forward to the next conference, to be held at Auckland on October 14 and 15. The secretary of the Associated Chambers desired to get remit in before those dates. It was resolved th-'t the following remits be sent forw;^:— “This conference, representative of Chambers of Commerce throughout the Dominion, is of the opinion that the number of public servants far exceeds requirements, and that the cost of adr ’nistration of Government Departments is excessive. We urge that immediate steps be taken to bring about drastic reductions.
“This conference is of the opinion that many Government servants are retiring at too early an age, resulting in heavy financial burdens on the Dominion, and which we consider could be avoided. We recommend an investigation into the present superannuation scheme with a view to making necessary alterations 4 ‘This conference is of the opinion that land tax should be abolished in. its entirety, and that income tax be levied on all sections of the community.” The chamber will meet again on Monday evening when further remits will be draughted.
