MARTON MABTON QUEEN CARNIVAL THE SPORTS QUEEN A most successful dance was held in the Marton Town Hall on Tuesday evening in aid of the Sports Queen. There was a large attendance including visitors from Feilding, Halconibe, Wangaehu and Bulls. The floor was in excellent order for dancing and the hall was artistically decorated with streamers of bracken and coloured artificial flowers suspended from the centre of the hall. The music by Packer’s Orchestra was of a high standard and demands for recalls were very persistent and extras were played by Miss Glengarry and Mr Glengarry. Messrs G. Denford and F. Corlett acted as M.’sC. The ladies’ committee dispensed a dainty supper which was appreciated by the dancers. During the evening a half-ton of coal donated by Mr T. A. Wilson) was won by Mr G. Sneddon. THE TOWN QUEEN Previous to their 4 4 500 flag tournament on Tuesday evening the Town Queen committee met and arranged all details in connection with the fancy dress masquerade ball to be held in the Marton Town Hall on Friday evening. The admission prices were fixed at double tickets ss; gents 3s 6d; ladies 2s 6d and confetti, streamers and balloons will be provided free. The ladies’ committee will dispense supper without any extra charge. The music will be supplied by the Ratana Orchestra. At Gould’s Cafe there was a record attendance at the 4 ‘500 flag” tournament. The prizes were won by Mr and Mrs J. Mogridge and Mr anl Mrs A. Grade, who donated their prize money to the committee. Consolaion prizes were won by Misses Baker and Thompson, Mrs Thomas and Mr Thomas. The manicure set was won by Mr W. H. Smith. THE PICTURES A vocal accompaniment for the filrrting of all love scene was one of the new “quirks” in picture making introduced by Director James Cruze for “Excess Baggage,” which comes to the Marton Town Hall on Saturday afternoon and evening. Cruze believed that William Haines, the star and Josephine Dunn, his leading lady, would react much more quickly to their emotions if a vocalist w r ere used in ad- - dition to the orchestra. With that end in view, he engaged Miss Vivian Ingraham a former stage singer, to sing on the set. That his ideas are well founded was proved by the beauty and realism of the love scenes which are said to be among the most “true to life’’ ever filmed. RUGBY REPRESENTATIVE TEAM The following team has been selected to represent the Rangitikei Rugby Union in a match against Te Kawau to be played at Bulls on Saturday:— McKenzie, S. Trotter, D. Service’s world famous novel 4 4 The Trail of ’9B” is showing with matinee’s daily. Ralph Forbes and Dolores Del Rio with thirty-three other principals and 15,000 4 ‘extras.” BOXING TOURNAMENT An amateur boxing tournament under the auspices of the Taihape Boxing Association will be held at the Town Hall this evening. A most attractive programme has been arranged and competitors will be present from Marton, Wanganui, Patea, Palmerston North and other centres. The programme includes a special welter-weight contest between A. IDay (Taihape), ex-champion of Southland and Auckland, also runner-up to Ted. Morgan, world’s amateur champion welterweight and Bert O’Keefe (Palmerston North) seven times champion of Iwanawatu. There will also be a special return lightweight contest between W. Clark (runner-up Wanganui championship) and Sid. Hogan (South Hawke’s Bay champion). Altogether a most interesting series of bouts should take place and boxing enthusiasts will no doiibt be present in large numbers.
