TAIHAPE GOLF NOTES. The first qualifying round of the club championships was played last week-end in conjunction with the first round of the Shergold Cup competition. The standard of golf amongst the senior players was very high, no less than five players returning cards of under 90. .Results are as follows, the gross scores counting for the championship and the nett scores for the Shergold Cup:— Senior Grade. —J. The semi-finals of the knock-out competition were played during the weekend and resulted as follows:—J. P. Mortland beat S. E. Addis; W. G. Crawford beat R. P. Marsh. Mortland and Crawford will meet in the final over 36 holes. An interclub match between the Taihape and Waimarino Golf Clubs will be played on the Raukura links during the week-end. The Taihape team and particulars in connection with the visit, will be announced later. Ladies Golf Club. The third qualifying round of the club championships has been completed, and the following players have qualifled: — Senior Championship.—Miss E. MeCormick Mrs Wakeman, Mrs McKenzie, Miss K. McCartin, Miss Billing, Miss F. Cleary, Mrs Neagle and Miss Sexton. Intermediate Championship. Miss L. O’Callaghan, Miss B. Cleary, Miss Mathew, Miss T. O’Callaghan and Mrs A. P. Smith. Junior Championship. Miss E. Spooner, Miss D. Mortland, Mrs W. Nicholls, Miss J. Hamill, Mrs J. Ormond. Miss E. Hamill, and Mrs Little. Miss E McCormick has won the Davies Memorial Cup, having returned the best two cards for the qualifying rounds of the championships. The semi-finals of the 4 * Knock-Out” competition will be played during the coming week-end. A sucessful dance in aid of the Anglican Bazaar funds was held at Turangaarere on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance and excellent dance music wa ssupplied by Mr R. Potaka who was assisted by Mr J. Millan Mr H. Bartie was an efficient M. Various competitions roused a great deal of interest. The box ol soap competition was won by Mr A. E. Patrick of Taihape, and the mat by Mr W. Byrnes of Hihitahi. Two Monte Carlo waltzes were held. The first was won by Mr McCavley and Miss Carnegnie, and the other by Mr J. Hughes and Miss Jones. An egg and spoon waltz created much amusement, and was won by Mr R. Healey and Mrs J. Ham. The ladies’ committee consisted of Mesdames C. Dunn Becker, S. Spooner, J. Robinson, R Sinclair, Averton, Bartosh, Ropi, and Logan and the desire to thank the following gentlemen for very valuable help.— Messrs C. Dunn, R. Sinclair, J. Millan, J. Ropi, H. Logan, J. Robinson, R. Potaka and H. Bartie. £2l 7s 6d was cleared as a result of the dance. GENERAL NEWS. A dance in aid of the country stall for the Church of England bazaar will be held in the Utiku Public Hall next Saturday night. Several novelty dances will be included in the programme and a most enjoyable evening is anticipated. MAJESTIC THEATRE If Emil Jannings continues making such great pictures, critics throughout the world will find it hard to procure adjectives to adequately describe them. Jannings has scored again, this time in a military general. His newest Paramount picture has been titled 4 4 The Last Command,” and shows to-night and Friday at the Majestic. This American-born German actor presents in his new production so commendable a figure that it cannot be compared to those of 44 The Way of All Flesh” and “The Patriot.” Added to this remarkable characterisation is an able director, Josef von Sternberg, who
